After crossing paths in New York City when they were both working as management consultants in 2014, Nancy and Sangho didn't strike up a relationship until two years later when they connected through mutual friends. When Sangho was ready to propose, he popped the question on the roof deck of their apartment building, surrounded by views of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Chrysler Building, and the Empire State Building.

With friends and family all over the world, Nancy and Sangho wanted a to plan a wedding that would bring everyone together for a memorable weekend. "We wanted to pick a place that was not only meaningful, but also a beautiful destination for our family and friends to enjoy," says Nancy. Sangho grew up in France, and the couple decided on Château de Tourreau in Avignon, Provence, as the ideal spot to host 85 of their nearest and dearest for an outdoor ceremony and reception on October 5, 2019. "We wanted a wedding that was very intimate and fun and would last as long as we wanted into the night," says Nancy. "We had moved away from our friends and families, so our wedding was our chance to hang out with them again."

A pale color palette of peach, blush, white, and gold carried through custom invitations, lush florals, and pastel bridesmaids' gowns, while a personalized wax seal, one-of-a-kind illustrations, a surprise fireworks show, and emotional speeches brought out the couple's style. "We had a lot of small, thoughtful details," says Nancy. "I think to our friends, it reflected our personalities."

Pretty in Pink

Muted blush pink envelopes held the couple's invitation suite, which included a color sketch of the venue on the envelope liner, a gold-printed sightseeing map, and pale pink accents on an invitation card presented in a floral vellum cover. "I didn't completely outsource the invitations," says Nancy. "I added my own flavors by assembling them with a wax seal of our initials and stamping the envelope with a press print and found the pretty vintage stamps. I also wrote the calligraphy on the envelopes myself. I found doing these things very soothing and fun."

Love at First Sight

From the moment she spotted her tulle Liz Martinez wedding dress in a bridal magazine, Nancy knew she wanted to try on the butterfly-embellished frock. But while she searched for a boutique that carried it, she shopped around. "I think part of the dress trial is educating yourself on exactly how you look in dresses of different shapes and styles, unless you wear a gown quite often," she says. "It does take a bit of adventuring out at the beginning. But in the end, I just felt the most bride-like in my dress. It really made me feel like, 'Oh my gosh, I am growing up and getting married!'"

The bridesmaids' Jenny Yoo gowns mirrored the wedding's color palette in varying tones of pink, blue, and purple. "I chose flowing chiffon material to create the airy and effortless look that would match the outdoor wedding," says Nancy. "For colors, I wanted my bridesmaids to be able to keep the dresses and wear them to something else, so I chose different shades and styles to give them a more personal touch."

Sangho chose classic black tuxedos for his groomsmen. "We wanted to keep them classy," says Nancy. For his own Loro Piana tuxedo, Sangho swapped out a black jacket for a white satin version with textured peak lapels, and added a Rolex Nancy gave him as a wedding present. "My dad's always told me watches make a very meaningful wedding gift, as it signifies the start of our time together," she says. "From this point on, my time has you, and your time has me."

In Your Eyes

Though Nancy had to convince Sangho to agree to a first look before the ceremony, it was worth it in the end, she says. "It ended up being the most meaningful thing we did. Too many parts of the wedding are about family and friends—the first look was a moment truly to ourselves," she shares.

She walked down the stairs, tapped him on the shoulder, and when he turned around, she says, "I saw his emotions change on his face, from shocked to overwhelmed with joy, and then to touched that this was really happening. Upon seeing that, and without speaking a word, we both had many, many wonderful memories flashing back to us. It was amazing to realize how much we've accomplished as a couple and how much we've grown."

The bridal party and family walked out of the chateau and down a long pathway toward the altar. Local string quartet Florence Bethune performed "To Make You Feel My Love" as the couple's parents processed; "Can't Help Falling in Love" for the groom and bridesmaids; and "Canon in D" as Nancy's father escorted her down the aisle—a moment she notes as one of her favorite parts of the day.

Nancy and Sangho asked Peter Madan Weddings to oversee their ceremony, which wasn't traditionally religious, but included Christian elements and readings that respected Sangho's family's deep faith. The bride and groom wrote their own vows, but kept them simple, says Nancy: "Both Sangho and I are quite private individuals, so no anecdotes."

After joining their friends and family for Champagne, rosé, and passed appetizers at the cocktail hour, Nancy and Sangho spent some time alone to capture a few newlywed portraits. "A wedding is about the two of you," says Nancy. "At the end of the day, it's about what makes the two of you the happiest."
