This Video of Barack and Michelle Obama Teasing Each Other Is the Best Thing You'll Watch Today
During the sweet clip, the former president and first lady also announced an exciting new initiative.
Barack and Michelle Obama have always shared their candid, fun-loving relationship with the public, and their recent appearance on the Chicago Public Library's online series, "Live From the Library," proved no different. According to People, the couple read the children's book The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds, which "illustrates the transformative power of words," Barack noted. "I love words." And that's when the couple's signature good-natured banter began: "Yeah your favorite," joked Michelle. "He's the word guy."
Later, in the midst of speaking about their love for the book, the former first lady also poked fun at her husband for his likeness to the main character, Jerome. "Mine are a little bigger," Barack said, referencing Jerome's ears. "A lot bigger," Michelle teasingly responded. All jokes aside, Michelle shared how her childhood library still holds a special place in her heart. "I remember my first trip to the library and how important I felt. My library card was a key that unlocked a world of knowledge and experiences," she said. The duo, who also met in Chicago, are reinforcing their ties to the Windy City and their love for its public library by adding a new branch, which they revealed in the clip; the wing will live in the South Side campus of the Obama Presidential Center.
This news comes as the couple continues to navigate post-White House life—and as they adjust to new routines as empty-nesters. Michelle told Oprah Winfrey during the "Oprah's 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus" tour back in February that she and Barack's strong relationship is guiding them through these changes. "Parenting takes up a lot of emotional space," she told Oprah, People reports. "Raising a family together is a hard thing. It takes a toll. But if you're with the person, if you know why you are with them, you understand that there was a friendship and a foundation there."
The two continue to take on life's twists and turns as they come—and Michelle knows that her journey with Barack will continue to be a happy one, whatever comes next. "We are happy people but why wouldn't we be?" she said. "We have our health. We have each other. We have a sense of purpose. I mean there are things to complain about, but he and I believe the two of us, we don't have anything to complain about. That's why we believe we owe so much because so much is given, much is expected. So I cannot sit up here and complain about my life."
