The newest royal child has finally arrived—and it's a boy! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their baby early this morning—Markle went into labor just hours ago, with her husband by her side—and revealed the news on their joint Instagram account. "We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses' son weighs 7 lbs. 3 oz.," read the statement. The new baby will be seventh in line for the throne, Time reports.
Shortly after the birth, Prince Harry announced that both mother and child are doing well—and that he's absolutely thrilled to be a father, reports ABC. "I'm just over the moon," he said, as is the couple's family. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news," Buckingham Palace said in another statement. "The Duchess' mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage."
Ragland arrived in the U.K. weeks ago, sparking rumors that Markle would deliver by the end of April. That wasn't the only speculation surrounding the royal baby, however. Rumors about the baby's gender started swirling not long after the couple's pregnancy was announced last fall. But, they certainly picked up after Markle confirmed her April due date back in January. In February, pink décor being loaded into Markle's baby shower hinted at a future princess. However, a source later told Us Weekly that Markle revealed to shower attendees that the couple was expecting a boy. Now, everyone finally has their answer.
We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz. The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives. More details will be shared in the forthcoming days.
As for the little one's name? Shortly after sharing their pregnancy with the world, the couple began discussing possible names for the future royal baby. After the royals met a fan's 5-month-old daughter, Prince Harry expressed some interest in the baby's name, Harriet. "As soon as I introduced my daughter to Harry, he said, 'That's a great name,'" the fan told E! News at the time. Up until the new parents knew their baby's gender, they affectionately called their child "little bump." We'll have to continue using that nickname since—if Prince Harry and Markle follow in the footsteps of Prince William and Kate Middleton—it will be a few weeks until we know the little boy's official name.
During her pregnancy, Markle completed the majority of her duties as a royal—which proved extremely productive for the new mom, who received plenty of parenting advice from fans in the process. Although it seems like we've been waiting for a long time, to Markle, this time has flown by. "She said her pregnancy had gone so quickly," a fan told People earlier this year. The Duchess also told the fan about how she feels about Harry becoming a father: "Meghan came up straight after and said that he's going to be a fantastic dad."
