Fans are still reeling from the news of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's secret at-home wedding, which took place this past Sunday. Surrounded by their closest family and friends, the couple decided to tie the knot after nearly 10 years together. Though their union was a long time in the making, their nuptials actually came together quickly, reports Entertaiment Tonight—a choice born out of their wish to keep their celebration as quiet as possible.

A source close to the newlyweds told the outlet that the duo wanted a small, low-key event because their relationship is constantly in the spotlight. "Marriage has become such a topic of conversation in their relationship. Everyone is always asking them when and now it's real, they did it! The gathering was small and intimate and rather spontaneous," the source explains. "They did some quick pre-planning before the holiday and decided that they didn't want a big elaborate wedding. They truly wanted to keep it a secret."

Another reason for the spontaneous nuptials? The couple had originally intended to wed in their house in Malibu—the place where they fell in love all over again—over the holidays. Unfortunately it was destroyed in the wildfire that ravaged most of the California coast. "Miley and Liam are both strong people and focused on helping others less fortunate than they are. Miley knows she will have a new Malibu home eventually and feels very grateful about that," a source recently told People. "Now she and Liam will look for a Malibu house as newlyweds. They can't wait to live there again."

Malibu might have been the place where the couple rekindled their romance, but they first crossed paths while filming The Last Song. That initial encounter, however, almost never happened—Cyrus told Seventeen in 2009 that Hemsworth initally didn't want the role. Thankfully he changed his mind—something that his now-wife, who's wanted to marry him ever since, is forever grateful for. "In the past, any time Miley would talk about getting married to Liam, she would always have a huge smile. She has been wanting to get married to Liam for years," the People source noted. "Everyone is very excited for them. Miley's family always loved Liam."
