A lot has changed for Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, who just welcomed their first child together, Kaavia James, via surrogate last month. In a new interview with Oprah, the couple opened up about how their journey to become parents brought them closer as married partners-and how their envisioned future together has shifted since Kaavia's arrival, reports E! News.

When asked what his biggest wish for his wife and new baby, the basketball player became visibly emotional. "As a whole, just obviously health," he said. "That's number one. I want us all to be as together as we can be. I want us to all support each other. I want us to all appreciate each other's abilities in life and support each other no matter what."

For Wade, he hopes that the strong line of communication he has with Union carries over into his relationship with his daughter. "I want us to always be able to come together, sit around a table and be able to talk about our issues, our feelings, our wants, our needs. I just want us to love each other."

This isn't the first time Wade has spoken about the importance of communication in his marriage. He told Entertainment Tonight earlier this year-long before Kaavia was born-that being able to talk through problems is the secret to his and Union's bond: "I think the biggest thing with me and my wife-what we've always tried to do in our short period of time, especially being married-is just to stay in constant communication with each other, try to support each other in everything."
