Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness tied the knot 22 years ago, making them one of Hollywood's most enduring couples. According to the duo, however, their love story almost didn't happen. In a new interview now streaming on The Aussies in Hollywood with Jenny Cooney podcast, Jackman admitted that his now-wife tried to end their relationship three weeks in—but that he persisted because he knew she was the one.
His connection with Furness was instantaneous, Jackman recalled. "I can count on my hand the amount of times in my life anything has felt that clear to me, and when it happens it's such a relief for me," The Greatest Showman star said of meeting Furness, reports Entertainment Tonight.
Furness, however, took some convincing. "I knew very early, I knew before Deb knew, even when she tried to break up with me, I knew [she was the one]," Jackman confessed. "She kind of [broke up with me], a little bit. Early on, three weeks in. I managed to talk her out of it, thank God."
The couple met back in 1995 on the set of their show Correlli, an Australian drama. According to Jackman, working with Furness was thrilling, both romantically and professionaly. "The best experience I ever had, working with another actor [was with Deborra]," he continued. "This was before we were romantically involved or had any idea that Deborra was interested. There was a chemistry…and every time we had a scene together it was unbelievable. Professionally, I've never had anything quite like that again."
