The diamond could have been an anniversary present.

Michelle Obama's fashion choices earned her the nickname of the First Lady of Style during her eight years in the White House, and the looks she's worn post-presidency have been just as sartorially inspiring. Her latest fashion moment, however, has little to do with her outfit choices. It looks as though the former first lady is wearing an impressive new accessory, which appears to be an upgraded diamond engagement ring.

This new diamond is quite different from her original bauble. The engagement ring Michelle wore throughout her time in the White House featured a simple solitaire stone set in a yellow gold band. The new rock, which she debuted on the Today show, is a square-cut diamond with an eye-catching pavé band, reports Us Weekly.

It's likely that Michelle's engagement ring upgrade was an anniversary present from her husband, Barack. This fall, the couple celebrated 26 years of marriage, so it's possible that the former president picked out some new jewelry for his wife. There couldn't have been a better time for a new accessory, since Michelle is currently out on tour promoting her memoir, Becoming. The book explores the couple's political and marital struggles and triumphs, which makes a new diamond (a symbol of their renewed union!) even more appropriate.

In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Michelle opened up about those struggles to help other couples going through a difficult period of married life. "I know too many young couples who struggle and think that somehow there's something wrong with them," she said. "And I want them to know that Michelle and Barack Obama, who have a phenomenal marriage and who love each other, we work on our marriage. And we get help with our marriage when we need it," she said.
