Sometimes you hear a song or read a book about love and you can't help but think it was written just for you. Certain lines have a way of staying with a person, so we asked women at various relationship stages—from engaged and dating to recently married and even married for 37 years!—to share the love and relationship quotes that resonate with them. Their heartwarming answers might just inspire you to think about your own favorite quote.
"I survive on the breath you are finished with."
This lyric from John Mayer's "Come Back to Bed" hits home for Amy, who always thinks of boyfriend James when she hears it. "It reminds me how much I've come to depend on him, how much I'm not the best me without him," she says.
"They told me that to make her fall in love I had to make her laugh, but every time she laughs, I'm the one who falls in love."
Jen has never been able to track down the origin of this quote, but knows its significance in her relationship with longtime girlfriend Love. At the beginning of what is now a four-year relationship, the pair would send photos of love quotes back and forth. This was one of their favorites, so Volpe did something extra special with it. "For our anniversary, Love compiled them all into a book for me—that quote is on the cover," Jen says.
"An invisible thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle but it will never break."
Christina, who's engaged to Dan, says that this quote from the novel The Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff is one that has always resonated with her. It's an ancient saying on the subject of soulmates, and it reminds Christina of her bond with her fiancé. "Dan and I have made many choices both on our own and by others around us. Regardless of this crazy life, these choices led us to each other," she says.
"You are the finest, loveliest, tenderest, and most beautiful person I have ever known—and even that is an understatement."
Jessica, who's been married to Brian for nearly a year, thinks this F. Scott Fitzgerald quote perfectly sums up how she feels about her husband and how hard it can be to express the sentiment on your own. "It's hard to put into words how you feel about the person you are in love with," she explains. "All of these adjectives may be true but not one of them ever really does it justice. How I feel about Brian is indescribable, and I love that this quote says that no one word should exist for it."
"For every pot, there's a cover."
Many of the most popular sayings on the topic of love and relationships have been around for a long time, and there's one simple reason for that: They're true. Kathleen, who has been happily married to her husband Al for 37 years says this witty quote is one she loves. "My favorite saying is true of many couples," says Kathleen. "It totally applies to me and Al—opposites attract!"
