When you're choosing a makeup look for an event as important—and as highly photographed—as a wedding, most women gravitate towards something classic and understated. This is especially true for the mothers of the bride and groom. While there's nothing wrong with the moms taking a more subtle approach to big-day beauty, it's important to note that a little color, when tastefully applied, can completely transform your look. One of the best ways for a mom to make her look pop is with colorful eye makeup (and no, we're not suggesting you wear bold blue eyeshadow on your son or daughter's big day!).

Here, four ways for the mother of the bride or groom to incorporate the right hint of color to her wedding makeup look.

Try a violet shadow.

This may surprise you, but violet eye shadow flatters just about everyone. Laura Mercier's Luster Eye Colour in African Violet is a very soft option with just the right hint of gold shimmer. After they reach a certain age, many women think that they can't pull off a shimmery shadow, but this is far from true. Sweep this sheer violet shadow over your lids for an unexpected (and flattering) pop of color and shine. Although it works for just about everyone, we especially love how it plays with brown and hazel eyes.

Accent your eyes with blue liner.

If you like to play it safe with a neutral eye look, brown and taupe-toned shadows can benefit from a little bit of color at the lash line, especially if you're a brown- or blue-eyed mom. The best eyeliner color to use? Deep blue! Trish McEvoy's Intense Gel Eyeliner Pencil in Arabian Nights is the one to try. It offers the perfect deep blue tone and is completely waterproof, so you don't have to worry about shedding a few happy tears.

Try a new mascara.

If you are too nervous to add color to your lids or lash line, a safe way to add just a little color is by swiping it onto your eyelashes. If your eyes have flecks of gold or green, give Clinique's Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara a try the shade in Black Honey. Its subtle eggplant hue that will really help your eyes pop.

Give green liner a try.

If you have green or brown eyes, you can't go wrong with a verdant-colored liner. Stila's All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner's tiny precision tip makes it a mistake-proof way to add color to your look. Depending on your exact eye hue, try one of their incredible green options: Emerald Green, Greenish-Blue, and Forest Green are our three favorites, but find the option that complements your look best.
