Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin's whirlwind engagement came as a shock to many. According to an interview the "Sorry" singer gave to GQ in early 2016, however, his proposal wasn't as much of a surprise as we thought. In fact, Bieber predicted that he and Baldwin might (eventually) tie the knot at the very beginning of their romance.
The duo's on-and-off again relationship history dates back to 2015 (though they've known each other since 2009 and became friends in 2014). At the time, the new couple were taking things slow—especially since the pop star was about to head out on tour and didn't want to begin a relationship he couldn't give his all to. But he did call Baldwin "the girl I love" before saying that he didn't want her to feel like she was "an added responsibility."
Here's where it gets interesting: "What if Hailey ends up being the girl I'm gonna marry, right? If I rush into anything, if I damage her, then it's always gonna be damaged," he continued. "It's really hard to fix wounds like that. It's so hard. I just don't want to hurt her." While this interview surfaced at an interesting moment—Bieber was spotted with high-profile ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez around the same time—it suggested that he was gearing up for the long haul with Baldwin.
The singer allegedly approached planning his proposal the same way. A source close to the couple revealed to Entertainment Tonight that Bieber had a method in place "for some time," and that he and Baldwin are "very excited about their future." "Justin decided to propose to Hailey in front of a group of people in the Bahamas, but had been planning to ask her for a couple weeks now," the insider explained. "Justin got down on one knee and asked Hailey to marry him. Before he asked, he requested everyone watching respect their privacy and not take photos or video. Justin wanted it to be special."
