The first dance is a special moment between a bride and groom. But since so many songs and artists exist today, picking the perfect tune-one that symbolizes your relationship and won't feel tired in the years to come-seems like an impossible task. Here, eight top wedding planners share their favorite first dance song of all-time, so you can get some major dance floor inspiration.
"The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra
If you're looking for a classic first dance song, Jacin Fitzgerald, owner and event planner at Jacin Fitzgerald Events in Atlanta, Georgia, says you can't go wrong with Frank Sinatra. "I've always loved how lighthearted and happy this song is," she says. "It captures the joy of the moment perfectly."
"Someone Like You" by Van Morrison
Beth Helmstetter, owner of Los Angeles, California's, Beth Helmstetter Events, says many of her couples play Van Morrison numbers at their weddings. She especially likes this hit for a bride and groom who are thinking of choreographing their first dance. "His lyrics are timeless and romantic, while the music itself offers a good tempo for a first dance by not being too slow," she explains. "His songs are perfect for a couple who wants to show off their dance moves, be it choreographed or a few simple waltz steps."
"Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver
Looking for a country number? This is the one, says Courtney Spencer, owner of Merriment Events in Richmond, Virginia. "I'd have to say my very favorite first dance song is 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' by John Denver," Spencer explains. "That's because we once planned a wedding on a rural farm belonging to the groom's family; he and his bride chose this as their first dance song. It was very special to that couple and helped to tell their story."
"Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppard
According to Jenna Lam, owner of Jenna Lam Events in San Anselmo, California, you can't go wrong with an unexpected tune. "We did a destination wedding in Mexico last year, and the bride and groom hosted a lawn games tournament the day before the wedding. The prize was getting to pick their first dance song, so the couple went into their dance without knowing what it was," she says. "When 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' came blaring out of the speakers, they fully embraced it, and it was a blast!"
"Songbird" by Eva Cassidy
"Anytime the couple selects a song that has significance or meaning, I think that adds to the moment," says Michelle Leo Cousins, event planner and designer at Michelle Leo Events in Salt Lake City, Utah. "I personally love 'Songbird'-the version performed by Eva Cassidy. This is what my husband and I chose as our song, and years later, I had a bride choose it for her processional down the aisle."
"Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole
Alicia Fritz, founder of A Day in May Events in Traverse City, Michigan, loves this Nat King Cole number for a first dance. "The lyrics are poetic and real, and they speak to the fondness of a partner and the unique bond only they share. I wish we heard more of these classic songs, but we do not!" she says.
"At Last" by Etta James
"Some may say 'At Last' has been done again and again, but it is a classic," says Rosemary Hattenbach, wedding planner at Rosemary Events in Ross, California. "It's loved by all ages, and most importantly, it never goes out of style and has great timing and pacing for a choreographed first dance. There is a reason it is used over and over at weddings. It stands the test of time."
"I Choose You" by Sara Bareilles
"It is not super popular, but I think that's why I like it," says Tzo Ai Ang, owner and planner at New York City-based Ang Weddings and Events. "I like that it's something more unique."
