Presenting Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge! Prince William and Kate Middleton's youngest child has officially been named, according to a statement from Kensington Palace, and the royal parents surprised fans with their choice. Initial predictions indicated that Albert, Arthur, or Philip were all frontrunners, but William and Kate ultimately chose a series of names most meaningful to them.
The baby's name, much like the names of siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte, is tied to a long royal legacy. Prince George—whose full name is George Alexander Louis—was named after a string of British royal kings (since he'll eventually be one!), most specifically his great-great-grandfather, King George VI. Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, on the other hand, was named with both her grandfather, Prince Charles, and aunt, Pippa Middleton (her middle name is Charlotte!), in mind. Her middle names were chosen for her great-great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, and grandmother, the late Princess Diana.
As for Prince Louis, his name is especially significant. Both his father and brother have Louis as one of their middle names. People reports that the choice was also likely a tribute to William's grandfather, Prince Philip, whose own grandfather was Prince Louis Alexander of Battenberg, and to Prince Charles, whose beloved great-uncle was Earl Louis Mountbatten.
Harper's Bazaar spoke to name expert Sarah-Jayne Ljungstrom about the choice, who said that Louis has long been popular. "The name is French in origin and has a suitably strong meaning as 'Famous in Battle.'" she said. The new prince's middle names were thoughtful choices, too. Arthur is another one of William's middle names and serves as a nod to King Arthur. "The name means 'Bear'—currently a popular baby name in its own right—and the 'Art' link suits this pair of History of Art graduates perfectly," Ljungstrom explained. As for his final name, Charles, that one is pretty obvious. The couple chose to honor William's father, the future King of England, by choosing his name for their son.
Prince Louis was born on April 23 around 11 a.m. GMT. Kensington Palace announced the celebratory news shortly after his arrival. "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs," the Palace tweeted. "The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news."
Since the birth, Prince William and Kate Middleton have been adjusting to life as a family of five. For William, that's meant some lost sleep! The dad-of-three could hardly keep his eyes open at his first royal event (a war veteran memorial service at Westminster Abbey) post-baby. He did, however, say that his little boy is settling into a sleep schedule—which means that hopefully he'll soon be able to, too. "Sleeping's going reasonably well so far, so he's behaving himself, which is good," he told reporters, noting that his son is in "good form, luckily" and doing "very well."
