John Cena and Nikki Bella got engaged last spring, but the couple moved in together long before that. In an interview on the Today show yesterday, Cena explained that milestone in their relationship, and the conversation led into a talk about their upcoming wedding.
It was Cena who asked Bella to cohabitate. "We were both living busy lives, and I wanted to show her I was ready to be more serious." He went on to say that he wishes he proposed then. But despite foreseeing marriage in the future, he took a drastic measure before letting Bella live with him. Apparently, she "had to sign a huge crazy agreement to come into the front door."
When the hosts asked if it was similar to a prenup, he replied, "I would be protected, in case she left, burned the house down, something like that." Cena explained that it was less about Bella and more about the challenges of living as a celebrity, though. He was counseled to have her complete the document. "I try to go by protocol," he explained.
Luckily for all, Bella didn't hesitate when it came to putting her name on the dotted line. "She signed it. Like totally without question," which made him realize the value of their relationship. To him, it was basically like her saying, "I am with you because I love you, here's proof I would still like to be here." So, will Cena and Bella sign a prenup, too? "Yes. To protect her," the wrestler and actor revealed. "She's made her own woman and she's proud of that. She stands for that."
