Congratulations are in order for Outlander star Caitriona Balfe! At the 2018 Golden Globes, the Irish actress revealed that she and her longtime boyfriend, Tony McGill, became engaged over the holidays. "It happened over the break. I'm very happy," she told People on the red carpet. Balfe, wearing a black Chanel couture gown, also debuted her three-stone engagement ring, which featured two sapphires set alongside the main circular diamond.
Notoriously private, Balfe has always remained tight-lipped about her two-year-long relationship. She has, however, brought McGill along as her plus-one to a few public events over the last few years. The couple attended the 2017 Oscar Wilde Awards last February, and were photographed together at Jodie Foster's Hollywood Star ceremony in 2016. Balfe and McGill were first linked in January 2015, when a friend posted an Instagram video of Balfe, in McGill's lap, playing the recorder.
Last night's Golden Globes Awards were quite the moment for Balfe. In addition to announcing McGill's proposal and debuting her engagement ring, the actress celebrated her third Best Actress in a Television Series, Drama, nomination for her role as Claire Fraser in the hit show Outlander—a series that celebrates the incredible marriage between the two main characters. In September 2017, Balfe opened up to Elle about what the show has taught her about love. "I think when you experience something that strong, it doesn't fade away," she explained. "You can keep it in a certain place, but it doesn't diminish."
