The magical proposal location—cliffs just off the couple's favorite hiking trail—where Scotty McCreery asked his new fiancé, Gabi Dugal, to be his wife was something out of a fairytale. But the American Idol winner almost didn't pop the question there at all. McCreery recently told People that he and Dugal stumbled upon the spot by accident, after getting lost on the mountain.

"We were looking for a waterfall about two or three years ago and I completely screwed up and got us lost," McCreery said. "And I was like, well, the next trail map, we're just gonna see where it takes us, and we got out and then came up to these beautiful cliffs. Now it's kind of our spot every time we go to the mountains." Today, the "Five More Minutes" singer is more than grateful for the mix up. "It did not work out as planned, but it probably worked out even better," he added. The picturesque spot is also close to the couple's hearts for another poignant reason—the mountain is just 200 miles northwest of their North Carolina hometown, where they met in kindergarten.

The musician also opened up about why the September proposal took place on a weekday. Dugal is a first-year nurse at Duke University Hospital, where she takes weekend shifts when her soon-to-be-husband is on tour. She tries to leave weekdays free, so she and McCreery can spend their time off together. Since the couple have to split their time between North Carolina, where Dugal works, and Nashville, where McCreery is based, weekday dates are essential. "You've just got to be pretty adamant about getting time together when you can," he explained.

Being in one spot, permanently, is what McCreery is most looking forward to about marriage. "Instead of her being on one side of town and me on the other, we might be able to have dinner [together.] We go to the same place. That to me would be the most special part of it all," he explained.
