According to Chip Gaines, the secret to making his seventeen-year-long marriage to Joanna Gaines work isn't really a secret. The Fixer Upper star opened up about being married to his wife in the January issue of Success, stating that "there's no secret" to being a dedicated partner.

He does, however, attribute his marital success to "hard work." "Jo and I have struggles and fighting and arguments just like anybody else," he explained. "This isn't like we got lucky and hit the lottery and the two perfect people fell in love." Despite any hardships, though, Gaines maintains that his wife (and business partner!) has made him the man he is today. "There are so many places where she's refined me as a man, as a husband," he said. "I'm a better person because of the experiences we've had together."

As Fixer Upper enters its fifth and final season, Gaines also revealed that one of the reasons the couple chose to step back from their HGTV hit has to do with focusing on their marriage and four children, Drake, Ella, Duke, and Emmie Kay. "Our oldest, who's 12, is becoming a teenager, and Jo and I just realized in our hearts that, as much as we love Fixer Upper, we want to make sure that we're here for our family during really crucial, pivotal points in its journey," he said. "Obviously [for] Jo and I as a couple, we just don't want to redline. You know, we don't want to run so hard after some dream or some goal only to find out that we've neglected the thing that means the very most to us, which is our marriage and our relationship."

Chip also revealed how he and Joanna met and began dating. He visited his future father-in-law's Waco auto care store, where he saw a photo of his bride-to-be hanging on the wall, so he began stopping in frequently in the hopes of seeing her in real life. Eventually he did, and, while it wasn't love at first sight, he stole her heart over time. "People might think Chip is just this goofy guy, and he is a goofy guy," Joanna said, of her husband. "But he's also the bravest person I know."
