As the world celebrates his engagement to Meghan Markle, Prince Harry has his mother, the late Princess Diana, on his mind. In the newly-engaged couple's first interview, Harry opened up about missing his mom—and said that she and his fiancée would have been the best of friends.
When asked what Princess Diana would have thought about Markle, he responded, "Oh, they'd be thick as thieves, without question. I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me," he said. "But then, as I said, [they] would have probably been best friends." Harry revealed that he's feeling his beloved mother's absence in the midst of this newfound joy. "It's days like today [when] I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news."
Thankfully, Harry—much like his big brother, William—was able to involve Diana in the proposal, by using diamonds from her personal jewelery collection for Markle's engagement ring. "But you know with the ring and with everything else that's going on, I'm sure she's with us yeah, you know, jumping up and down somewhere else."
While Diana may never be able to meet her new daughter-in-law, Markle has made quite an impression on another matriarch in her soon-to-be-husband's life: the Queen. The future royal said she loved being able to meet Elizabeth the II "through his lens," stating that she had "incredible respect for being able to have that time with her." According to Harry, Markle passed the Queen's ultimate test immediately. "The corgis took to you straight away," he laughed.
The couple's interview was filled with heartfelt, emotional moments—but the couple loosened up off camera. An unaired clip of the interview was released on Monday, showing the couple laughing and joking around with the camera crew after finishing the segment. While there's no audio, professional lip readers have speculated that Harry joked with Markle about interrupting him onscreen. At one point, the duo struck the same funny pose before looking at each other and cracking up. Even off air, Markle never let go of Harry's hand.
