There so are many moments from your relationship that you'll remember forever, but few will be as clear as your engagement. For those in the LGBTQ community, the right to marry under the sanction of the law has only been a given for a few years, which can make the proposal feel even more meaningful. Here, four real couples share proposal stories that'll make you swoon.

Ways to Make Your Proposal Pop

Third time's the charm.

Destin tried to propose to Navid twice before he finally nailed it. "He worked at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore across the street from the Botanic Gardens. It was late fall, and Destin lured me to the Gardens with the promise of an Embassy-sponsored Thanksgiving buffet," Navid explains. "As we walked through the flowers toward Swan Lake, I heard a choir singing. Not just any choir, but my choir. And they were singing our song. As we got closer, Destin knelt down, and, with the melody of 'Summer's Love' serenading us, he asked me to be his husband. A few tears, an exhilarating 'Yes,' and a kiss later, and we were popping champagne and celebrating with our friends as the sun set."

A passion project.

Melissa spent nine months planning a proposal that spoke to her now wife Jamie's passions, and ultimately popped the question in front of New York City's historic Stonewall Inn. "One of my huge passions in life is LGBTQ history, so Melissa knew how important the Stonewall Inn is to me. I thought we were just going to New York City for vacation, but I was wrong," Jamie explains. "She got down on one knee right in front of the Stonewall Inn and asked me to marry her, and of course I said 'Yes!' We had several strangers stop and watch on the street while the proposal was happening, and they all joined in and cried happy tears with us." After, the couple went inside for what Jamie thought was a celebratory drink, only to find 15 of their family members waiting to further surprise her with an engagement party Melissa had also planned. As Jamie says, "It was the most epic, thoughtful and romantic proposal a girl could ask for!"

A double proposal.

"As a huge basketball fan, I always dreamed of a proposal like Kim [Kardashian] got—but on a basketball court," Falyn explains. Lisa delivered in the form of a one-of-a-kind experience. "She sent a LinkedIn message to the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment staff to get permission and chased them down for venue availability and team scheduling, then coordinated a surprise visit for me at the Toronto Raptors private training facility. She got down on one knee on the basketball court at the Biosteel Centre on November 9th and asked me to join her 'two-man team for life!'" After, the newly-engaged couple was joined by their immediate families for dinner—and a second proposal. "My mother brought Lisa's ring to dinner, where I privately asked her to marry me," she adds.

A movie theater proposal.

"For my proposal, I lied and pretended we were going to a Saturday morning screening of a friend's film," Jordan explains. "When we arrived at the AMC Century City, there was a photo of the two of us on the screen in the empty theater. Leor was totally shocked and asked 'Are you proposing?' So after gushing my love, I got down on one knee and proposed with a watch. After a 'Yes' and a hug, we sat in the theater and watched a slideshow I had made of the two of us throughout our relationship. But the surprise wasn't over yet, I already had our bags packed in my trunk and drove up to Paso Robles for two nights of wine tasting and incredible meals."
