Former Dancing with the Stars contestant J.R. Martinez is engaged to his longtime girlfriend Diana Gonzalez-Jones. The actor and dancer shared the news on Instagram on Sunday, posting several photos of the happy moment.
"It wasn't easy but we did it. Now we're doing it," he wrote. He also revealed that the proposal—which involved the couple's five-year-old daughter, Lauryn Anabelle—didn't go exactly to plan. "Who cares that our daughter was crying due to the fact that she fell right before and hurt her knee. We were basking in joy!" he joked. The Army veteran, who survived a 2003 bombing in Iraq, included a photo of Lauryn nestled between her newly-engaged parents, her mom's emerald-cut engagement ring on full display.
Martinez and Gonzalez-Jones first crossed paths in 2008, when he joined the cast of All My Children. The future Mrs. Martinez was working as an assistant to the show's executive producer, and quickly became the actor's close friend. But it took some time for friendship to blossom into romance—they didn't start dating until 2010. "We were so good as friends that romantically, we just clicked right away," Gonzalez-Jones told People in 2011.
In 2011, just a month after Martinez won season 13 of Dancing with the Stars, the duo announced that they were expecting and welcomed Lauryn the following year. "I was so focused mentally, emotionally, on Dancing with the Stars and then I was also processing, 'Whoa, I'm going to be a dad!'" Martinez told Us Weekly that December. "That's a lot of information to process at one time! When she initially told me, I was so excited." The couple may have hit a few bumps in the interim—they split briefly in 2014—but are stronger than ever today. "All this time I was looking for the perfect guy, and I had him right next to me," said Gonzalez-Jones.
