This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown and his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe, have been married for a decade. If Sunday night's Emmy Awards are any indication, their relationship has never been better. The pair spend a lot of time together, both at home and in the studio, since Bathe also has a role on This Is Us. Their secret to making this work? Bathe never rehearses with Brown.
Keeping work separate from home life isn't a new practice for the Hollywood pair (Brown and Bathe were also co-stars on the Lifetime series Army Wives). "Sterling and I have been in the game for a long time. We go back to college. We've learned that there are certain minefields and pitfalls in our relationship, like a slalom, we just move right past them. Rehearsing together is one of those things," Bathe told E! News. Brown agreed. "It's that simple!" he said.
Their happy-marriage strategy is clearly working. When asked how he felt just hours before the ceremony (Brown took home the Emmy for Outstanding Actor Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in This Is Us), he was at ease, simply because his wife was there. "I feel fantastic. I get a chance to be with my beautiful wife," he said. "I get a chance to share this night with my amazing cast. What do I have not to like?"
Unfortunately, Brown was played off the stage in the middle of his acceptance speech, and wasn't able to thank his wife for her support. Prior to the ceremony, he revealed that this was something he had planned to do if he won. Thankfully, the Emmy winner got a do-over in an interview with Access Hollywood later that evening. Addressing his wife through the camera, Brown delivered the last half of his emotional speech: "And to my wonderful, beautiful, incomparable wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe, you're unsung, baby, for everything you do for our family, so it is my joy and honor to sing your praises. I love you and thank you for giving me two of the most beautiful things that were ever put on this planet."
