Typically, the media gets word of celebrity engagements with lightening speed. When Ronda Rousey revealed her ring from fiancé Travis Browne last week, we were surprised they had kept mum for a bit (read: a week or two, tops). Meanwhile, another engagement's been right under our noses, and this one's been a secret for a whopping six months!
While guest-appearing on Late Night with Seth Myers last night, Saturday Night Live star Aidy Bryant popped the secrecy bubble around her proposal from Connor O'Malley. That's right: The two are engaged!
One night this past October, Bryant came home to something curious: Her dog was wearing a mysterious bowtie. "I was like, 'My dog doesn't wear a bowtie! Where is he going tonight?' Basically, the second I shut the door, a man—who I discovered was Connor—frantically came around the corner and was just like, 'Will you marry me?' No box. No 'I love you,'" Bryant said. "Just a man in full terror standing very far from a dog in a bowtie, just holding a lose ring going, 'Will you marry me?!'"
At first, the funny woman thought she was part of a joke. (O'Malley did write for the very show her reveal was on). "I was like, 'What?!' I truly couldn't comprehend what was happening." Once the situation was made clear, though, Bryant was happy to respond. "Then I said, 'Of course I'll marry you, I love you,' and it was really nice!"
As for why O'Malley proposed the way he did, the situation was actually pretty thoughtful. "I asked him 'Why did you do this?' and he was like "Well you always said that you wanted it to happen in our house if it ever happened,' and I was like 'That's true, I wanted it to be private.'" That's not where the reasoning ended, however. Like all of us, Bryant's big on the no-makeup and no-bra look at home. "'But I also knew that you probably wanted to be wearing a bra and have makeup on,'" O'Malley apparently told her, "so he was like 'I knew I had to do it after you had just gotten home from work, otherwise there would never be another moment.'" SO relatable.
Bryant and O'Malley have been together for almost nine years, so while the engagement's a surprise, it's not unexpected. "We've seen each other through a lot," Bryant told Myers, including through unglamorous first jobs and the likes. Watch the full video above and laugh and smile at the adorable story.
