Exclusive: Newlyweds Katie Maloney & Tom Schwartz Reveal the Best Marriage Advice Lisa Vanderpump Gave Them
We sat down with the Vanderpump Rules stars (plus Stassi Schroeder) to get all of their wedding dos and don'ts.
This past summer, Vanderpump Rules stars Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz (aka everyone's favorite Pump couple) tied the knot in a beautiful Northern California wedding surrounded by 100 guests. And, you guessed it, many of their co-stars attended the wedding-some were even in the bridal party. One VIP at the celebration? Lisa Vanderpump, who actually officiated the ceremony. We sat down with the newlyweds (and their good friend and co-star Stassi Schroeder) to discuss the big moments and tips from their big day-including Lisa's amazing marriage advice: "Be partners in life and say I love you before you go to bed and when you wake up every day."
This season of Vanderpump Rules, Katie and Tom are taking viewers inside wedding planning, their joint bachelor/bachelorette party, and the big day. Don't get ahead of yourself-much of their wedding is still top secret until the finale. But don't you worry, we got the stars to spill some wedding details and dos and don'ts.
On Lisa Vanderpump officiating their wedding:
"It was kind of our idea, but it was my dream," Tom joked. Since both are not religious and Vanderpump is ordained, it just made sense. "Lisa's someone who's been close to us and supportive in our relationship," Katie said, "and you know, she's ordained, so why not?" Tom added, "We don't have our families in the city, at least most of us. She's like our mother figure, she's our mom in L.A."
On wedding planning:
Though Katie took the reins on the wedding planning, the couple knew what they wanted. "I kind of did want to tailor it to me and Tom specifically and just felt natural and not like, 'Oh this is what they do at weddings so we have to have this," Katie said. "We wanted people to feel like they were at a celebration of life, and a party, and not just a wedding," Tom said.
And that's just what the couple did. Their advice? "Keeping it as simple and personal to the two of you and really what you want that day ... is going to help the decision-making and the whole planning process go a lot smoother," Katie said. Tom added, "Don't bicker and fight and make it a bigger deal than it has to be."
On popping the question to her bridesmaids:
She took that phrase very literally. Katie-just like every other bride-searched on Pinterest for fun ways to ask her friends that included popping a balloon. Each 'maid received a box that said, "Now that Tom popped the question, it's my turn." When opened, there was a balloon, a safety pin, and a paper doll with her face photoshopped on. "I spent like four hours photoshopping their heads onto these little paper doll things," Katie explained. Each girl would use the safety pin to pop the balloon, and inside they would find a paper doll Katie bride that asked the question. How cute!
On not having a maid of honor:
Though Stassi joked about her self-given maid-of-honor title, Katie decided not to have a MOH. "They all had things that I kind of went to each of them for," Katie explained. "They all had something to contribute."
On mixing up the bridal parties:
Tom's attendants included a groomswoman, co-star Ariana Madix. "She's a close friend, and we were chatting and she mentioned that it's been a lifelong dream to wear a tux," Tom explained. "I was like, 'How about I fulfill that dream for you?' And that was sort of the transition."
On Stassi giving a bridesmaid speech:
"If you're just heartfelt and you really think about the couple and who they are together, that's really the best way to do it," Stassi said.
On Stassi "crashing" their honeymoon:
"I did not crash it … I was invited!" Stassi insisted. After a week of honeymooning, Katie and Tom decided to invite Stassi to join in. "They were there for a week, a whole week, and I got a text from them being like, 'Listen, we've had a week together, it's not too late to if you want to come.' And I was like 'YOLO' and bought a ticket that day, and just flew out."
In fact, the three were all in agreement that inviting friends on a honeymoon, or a "buddymoon," is fun-just make sure to get some alone time first. "Go somewhere the two of you for a few days, and then celebrate with your friends," Katie said.
Through it all, Katie and Tom are just as in love as they were on their wedding day. "I cried more in those two days than I've cried in my whole life cumulatively," Tom said. "It was so sweet," Stassi said. "You were happier than, like, Katie!"
"There are so many great surprises … It was just the best two days of our lives, without a doubt," Tom said. We're so excited to see what those surprises might be! To follow along, tune in to Vanderpump Rules on Bravo at 9 p.m. every Monday.
