But who has been by her side throughout the whole wedding-planning process, helping choose the color scheme and the caterer and the guest list and everything else in between? That's right, the mother of the bride. Just like the bride, the MOB (as well as the mother of the groom) should stand out in clothes that make her look and feel beautiful. Lots of designers are creating mother fashions that are chic and flattering while still being age-appropriate.Instead of opting for a safe, predictable look, why not wow guests with one of these gorgeous modern options?
While all eyes were on Prince William's bride, Kate Middleton, in her Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen-designed splendor, there was an appreciative hum surrounding her mother's outfit as well. Mama Middleton chose a knee-length sky blue Catherine Walker coat and dress combo paired with frog clasp detailing at the waist and cuffs along with a matching hat, worn at a jaunty angle. Wearing white to a wedding seems to be a group effort for the Knowles family. At Solange Knowles's 2014 wedding, her entire family, including sister Beyoncé and mom Tina, wore varied shades of white. Tina's dress was a figure-hugging ivory column with a wide gold cuff-style choker. At her own wedding in 2015, Beyoncé's mom wore a stunning Romona Keveza ivory dress with artfully placed cutouts and barely any jewelry. Her only accessories were her bright red lips and pin-straight hair. The takeaway of both of Tina's dresses: Wear a style that shows off your shape and confidence.

While it might not be commonplace for the mother of the bride to be rocking a corset detailed dress and loosely flowing hair, it makes sense when the MOB is Diana Ross. The legendary entertainer donned a white Vivienne Westwood Red Label gown with a plunging neckline and a bold statement necklace to daughter Chudney's 2015 wedding. Though moms, including Kris Jenner, have also worn white to their offspring's weddings, get permission from the bride about "sharing" her color before swiping a credit card.

MOBs who like a vintage-chic look should take a peek at Judy Garland's MOB outfit for inspiration. Daugther Liza Minnelli's first wedding to Peter Allen was a small, low-key affair that took place in 1967 in New York City. The "Wizard of Oz" legend wore a blue and green striped coat with a pale yellow dress, necktie, and pillbox hat. While going totally retro might upstage the bride, picking up aspects of Garland's outfit are totally appropriate for a modern wedding, such as wearing a trendy overcoat or hat.
