Lakum Fall 2017 Wedding Dress Collection
Strong. Sophisticated. Inspired. Those are three words Lakum co-founders and co-designers Sathya Balakumar and Heather Green use to describe their label, which "caters to the modern bride seeking to express her individuality." That mission remains clear in their new wedding dresses, which were unveiled during Bridal Fashion Week. For Fall 2017, Balakumar and Green were inspired by Ai Weiwei's Blossom project, in which the artist incorporated thousands of porcelain flowers in unexpected places. Aptly called "Blossom," the collection "expresses the transformative nature of beauty," and that "loveliness exists in all places, even unforeseen ones."
Known for its focus on detail and movement and marrying heritage and culture with modernity and personality, the Brooklyn-based atelier's new collection consists of contemporary wedding dresses with traditional touches—made for the unconventional bride. Think soft, feminine silhouettes juxtaposed with edgy details. Lakum infuses individuality into each design, with even popular wedding dress trends taking atypical form: an innovative illusion neckline and surprising set here, a bridal jumpsuit and tiered ruffled hem on a short wedding dress there. With its unique use of fabrics, delicate floral embellishments, and sexy wedding dresses featuring strategically placed cutouts and sky-high slits, the fashion brand seems to fully embrace that a bride can be both demure and daring, classic and quirky.
