Kelly Clarkson has been America's sweetheart ever since she won American Idol in 2002, but it wasn't until 2013 that she found a sweetheart of her own. Clarkson and her husband, Brandon Blackstock, got married in 2013 when Clarkson was 31—which, she says, is the reason they have such a solid marriage.
"I think the biggest thing is just getting married later in life … You change so much in your twenties," Clarkson said at a luncheon in New York where she was celebrating her new children's book, People reports. "I mean, [my husband] got married at 21 in his first marriage, and they both went, 'What?!' It can be very hard to grow in the same way. Your twenties are all about your growth and giant mistakes."
Clarkson, who shares four kids with Blackstock, including stepkids Savannah and Seth and younger children River and Remington, also commented on being a small-town girl from Texas, where getting married young is the norm. She said people were shocked that she didn't get married and have kids right away like everyone else. "Especially in this day and age, I had a very high bar," she said.
The singer maintains that it's her and her husband's independence that keeps their marriage so great. "I have an awesome life, and I can hold this down on my own," she said. "I learned that from my mother. She depended a lot, financially, on a man. I don't depend on him, and he doesn't depend on me. We made our own way in our own right, and I think that's what really helps, too."
