Another celebrity is speaking out about his marital issues—but thankfully, this one has a happy ending. In January 2015, Grey's Anatomy's "McDreamy" Patrick Dempsey announced his split from his wife, makeup artist Jillian Dempsey (née Fink), after nearly 16 years of marriage. They recently reconciled, and the actor is now opening up about the "scary" experience of facing divorce.
"It's always destabilizing when you're potentially breaking up a family or you have a big section of your life that's ending," Dempsey, told PEOPLE. He and Jillian share a 14-year-old daughter, Talula, and 8-year-old twin sons, Darby and Sullivan.
But, he says, "Our marriage was not something I was prepared to let go of. I didn't feel like we had done all the work. And we both wanted to do that work. That's where it started."
Part of the process? Couples counseling, which Dempsey calls "very important." And he isn't the first star to credit therapy for making marriage work: Among others, Will Smith recently revealed counseling saved his union with Jada Pinkett Smith, and Kristen Bell has said that she and Dax Shepard go to therapy together to keep their relationship healthy.
"Everybody has their own path," Dempsey said. "Jill and I decided it was time to work on our issues and improve. We wanted to be role models for our kids like, okay, if you have differences, you can work them out ... You've got to keep at it. You've got to communicate, and stay open and not get lazy. And not give up. And lots of sex!"
The two certainly seem to be more in love than ever. Just yesterday, Dempsey shared adorable shots of his "smokin hot wife" and beautiful family at the premiere of Bridget Jones's Baby in London.
Jillian also showed some love on social media. "Date night with the family," she captioned a photo of her and her husband. "We are so proud of @patrickdempsey who is so fantastic in this role."
