Last night at the CFDA Awards, Beyoncé, being the Queen that she is, gracefully accepted the Fashion Icon award and thanked all those who helped her become the Fashion Icon she is today, including her own family members.
Bey explained that, "starting out in Destiny's Child, high-end labels didn't really want to dress four black country curvy girls, and we couldn't afford designer dresses and couture." Her mother, who learned how to sew from her own mother, hand-made the girl group's first costumes, and has continued to use her talent to make many of Queen Bey's famous outfits, including her own wedding dress, which you can see at the 2:30 mark of this video from the "On The Run" tour.
"My mother is fabulous and beautiful and she's here tonight," Beyoncé said proudly. "My mother, my grandmother, and my uncle are always with me so I cannot fail. My mother actually designed my wedding dress, my prom dress, my first CFDA Award dress, my first Grammy dress, and the list goes on and on."
She thanked her mother, grandmother, and uncle for "showing [her] that having presence is about far more than the clothes you wear and your physical beauty." She also called for designers to use their influence to change how we see body image: "We have the opportunity to contribute to a society where any girl can look at a billboard or magazine cover and see her own reflection," she said. "Soul has no color, no shape, no form." Bow. Down.
