What Fashion Designers Wore for Their Own Weddings
If you really want to look trendy and fabulous at your wedding, take a cue from these fashion designers' nuptials—after all, who better to give fashion inspiration than designers themselves? We compiled wedding photos from some of the best bridal and ready-to-wear designers' big days. Many, like Hayley Paige and Laure De Sagazan, wore dresses they designed themselves, while others tied the knot before they had started creating collections. All looked as chic as you'd expect big names in fashion to look on their big days. Get inspired by their beautiful bridal looks!
In December 2015, wedding dress designer Jenny Packham married her longtime partner, Matthew Anderson, at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London. Packham decided to forgo the traditional white gown and wore a dove gray guipure lace cocktail dress of her own design. She completed the look with "a fabulous pair of Christian Louboutin heels and a birdcage veil, scattered with delicate Swarovski crystals," she told us.
One half of Marchesa, Keren Craig, got married before the brand even began designing wedding dresses. The one-shoulder gown with hand-embroidered detailing and an empire chiffon skirt was part of the Marchesa runway collection at the time, so Craig had it custom made in an ivory color fit for a bride.
Bridal designer Hayley Paige married Danny Wallis at a fairytale ceremony and reception in Lake Tahoe, where she wore three—yes three—different outfits for the occasion. "If I had had more time before the big day, I would have worn even more....because #whynot," Paige told us.
The first dress Paige describes as having a "Princess Aurora vibe," with its long sleeves, chameleon lavender layering, and ivory crosshatch embellishment. "The second look [pictured] was an ode to the haute couture ball gown, with ahnd-painted silk flowers and a corset-style crop top," she said. The third, a slinky, sparkly nude reception gown, with "hologram detailing and a super sassy low back."
Laure de Sagazan
In true Parisian-girl style, French bridal designer Laure De Sagazan designed an easy, slip-style silhouette to wear on her wedding day. "It was a mix of several dresses of different collections," she said. "I felt 100% myself the whole day and can confirm that our dresses are a dream of comfort!"
Sachin & Babi
Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia first met in 1994 at FIT, where they were both international students (Sachin from Mumbai, Babi from New Delhi) who wanted to pursue their dreams of designing. The first year at school, the two were best friends, but their feelings for each other grew. Once they graduated college they started their business and "just like high school sweethearts" got married soon after. Pictured here, Babi says she "wore a traditional Indian sari and headdress, with embroidered details inspired by Parsi techniques."
Lihi Zwillinger designed her own wedding dress, which she named "Lihi." The daughter of Mira Zwillinger had just graduated from the Shenkar College of Design in Israel and got married soon after. "It was the first gown I ever designed, which opened our world to the love of bridal design," Lihi said. The dress was a huge success, and so she teamed up with her mom and has been the lead designer of wedding dresses for Mira Zwillinger ever since.
Charlie Brear was still a stylist when she got married in an original 1960s vintage dress. "I loved it as it was so reminiscent of my mom's dress," she said. "My photos also look like hers, which I really love, timeless and low-key." It was actually vintage wedding dresses that gave her the inspiration to start designing in 2005.
Israeli designer Lili Hod is known for her elegant and effortless dresses with intricate details like beading and delicate embroidery. Her wedding dress mirrors her design style: a full-length V-neck boho sheath with gorgeous beading and fringe.
When the Project Runway alum-turned-famous-fashion-designer Christian Siriano wed singer Brad Walsh, both grooms looked dapper as can be in matching all-black suits custom-made by Siriano's friend and fellow designer, David Hart.
This fashion designer met her rock-star husband, Gabe Saporta, at a red-carpet event in the fall of 2010. The couple made it official with a gorgeous ceremony and reception in Barbados in May 2013. Fetherston wore a white gown of her own design and Jimmy Choo shoes.
Posh Spice had two wedding looks—one traditional white ball gown from Vera Wang and a purple ensemble for the reception from her friend and designer Antonio Berardi.
As you can imagine, the famous fashion designer was one stylish groom when he said "I do" to longtime partner Gustavo Rangel in April 2016. Both in couture tuxes and bow ties, the guys look just as great as their chic surroundings in Tulum, Mexico. While First Lady Michelle Obama, one of Wu's famous clients, wasn't in attendance, actress Diane Kruger, model Constance Jablonski, fashion blogger Bryanboy, and Glamour Fashion News Director Jane Keltner de Valle all celebrated with the happy couple.
Though she eventually walked down the aisle in a traditional white wedding dress, Jenny Yoo was actually inspired to begin her bridal collection after experiencing the frustration of shopping for bridesmaids' dresses for her friend's wedding.
The popular bridal designer married her husband and now-business partner Tom Bugbee back in 1995. While searching for her own wedding gown, Lhuillier was frustrated with the lack of non-traditional options. "I finally found a Ron LoVece gown I liked, but that search planted a seed," she said.
Diane von Furstenberg
The fashion icon married her second husband, Barry Diller, at a city hall ceremony, with her children serving as witnesses. Furstenberg and Diller first met in the '70s and remained "lovers and friends" until they officially tied the knot in 2001. Furstenberg kept it simple at her civil ceremony, wearing a nude dress and a glam fur vest of her own design.
Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and her business partner Rodger Berman tied the knot in New York City in February of 1996. The ever-chic Zoe wore a custom long-sleeve Isaac Mizrahi number, and accessorized with a tulle veil and sparkling tiara.
