Just in Time for Wedding Season, Christian Siriano Released a Bridal Collection—His First Since 2017

Inspired by the many couples who canceled their weddings in 2020, the lauded fashion designer created an inclusive bridal collection to help jumpstart this post-pandemic moment.

Christian Siriano launched a formal wedding dress collection last week, his first since 2017 (he broke into this market the year prior). The celebrated fashion designer never strayed far from the wedding world, however. "We do so many custom brides," he tells Martha Stewart Weddings. "We never stopped. But I hadn't put out a collection for people—I wanted something a bit more diverse that what we were making. We wanted to give our brides and new customers more of a range."

His decision to put the robust series (it boasts 26 looks total!) together was driven by a desire to give women of the hour the options she deserves. "So many weddings were canceled—but things are changing and we are getting back into this world," says Siriano. "The bride should be able to have her dream moment and wear what she wants to wear."

Consider that mission accomplished: With a mix of classic and contemporary ensembles that run the gamut from simple and sleek to forward-thinking, there truly is something for everyone in Siriano's latest oeuvre—in color (the pink ensembles were a request from his brides), price tag (gowns range from $2,000 to $10,000), style, and fit (dresses go up to a size 28). On the modern side of the spectrum, you'll find a "feminine-meets-masculine" asymmetrical suit, complete with an epic train and two black-and-white tuxedo-inspired pieces. They signal Siriano's signature, design-first aesthetic. "They aren't just your typical wedding look," he explains, noting that they'll strike a chord for the cool, fashion-forward bride-to-be.

On the other end? Classic ball gowns with pleated off-the-shoulder sleeves and simple sheaths—think refined, elevated couture. "We actually tried to take pieces and things that we have done in the past and rework them for a bride," explains the designer on these pieces. "Some of them have been seen on celebrities and on the runway. There's a balance of red carpet, but more whimsical and playful. A lot of the fabrics are softer. Nothing is overworked or too heavy."

It's this lightness that separates this bridal collection—composed from plenty of tulle and chiffon—from his last; his 2017 series was "a bit heavier," he explains. They gowns are airy and effortless, even though they are glamorous, he adds. "This was not the time to do full-out heavy beading or embroidery." The result? Gowns that move—which is an integral part of the wedding-dress experience, he adds. "These dresses are made for celebration; everyone can dance in and move in them. I love a gown that looks good in motion."

As for his favorite piece in the collection? "It's so hard to choose—it really is. I like elements of everything," he explains, "but the pearl-encrusted gown was inspired by my best friend's wedding dress that I made for her years ago. That one has sentimental value." The slinky column number is studded with multi-sized pearls across the bodice and has sleeves that shimmer thanks to silver threadwork—it's certainly a showstopper.

Bridal launch aside, Siriano is busy: He is in the throes of filming the upcoming season of Project Runway and also just debuted a mattress in partnership with Beautyrest. "When we took on this partnership, I had just started designing the bridal collection—so I married the two," he explains, noting that the mattress (which was designed with couples in mind!) has a topper inspired by a big-day garment. "I loved that couples would be registering for this or purchasing it for their new home. I wanted that nostalgia. I wanted to translate a wedding dress into the home. I really love that match."
