Toast is no stranger to attention. The floppy-tongued Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and puppy mill rescue has more than 330,000 followers on Instagram thanks to her sassy attitude and fun fashion choices. And tonight, at the High Line Hotel in New York City, she adds another role to her dog bowl: Bride.
The lucky groom? Fellow rescue and Insta-dog, Finn (of Amanda Hearst's Humane Society committee, "Friends of Finn"), a dachshund-Chihuahua mix. Ever the activists, Toast and Finn are tying the knot for a good cause: Zola Wedding Registry, the event host, will donate the proceeds of the wedding and registry to organizations dedicated to ending inhumane treatment at puppy mills.
A fabulous cause (and a fabulous dog!) calls for an equally fabulous gown. So to design Toast's wedding dress, Martha Stewart Weddings turned to none other than Marchesa duo Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman. "I knew I had to find a special dress for this special bride," says MSW Editorial Director Darcy Miller, "and leave it to Marchesa to dress Toast in style as she walks down the aisle!"
Though this marks Marchesa's very first doggie wedding dress, the gorgeous gown, complete with Marchesa jewelry and a custom veil, stays true to the brand's signature glamorous style. "We looked at a lot of pictures of her and thought what might suit her, and we thought she should have some real texture to the dress," Craig tells us. "We thought the tulle, ruffles, and lace complemented her … I'm hoping the groom will be happy! We think she looks absolutely gorgeous."
At the fitting, Toast seemed pleased with her look. A mere 24 hours before her wedding, the personable pup posed happily for photos (taken by runway photographer Jaka Vinsek!), showing no signs of cold paws but drifting off to sleep toward the end. Don't let her sleepy eyes fool you, though: "Toast is so excited. This is her dream wedding," says her owner and "mother of the bride" Katie Sturino of The12ish Style. "She's a girl's girl. She's always wanted to get married—unlike her sister, Muppet. Who knows if she'll ever find someone."
"The night before the big day, Toast and all her friends are going out to dinner and then we're going to have a big sleepover and watch Nancy Meyers movies, and then tomorrow we'll wake up and go to the salon," Sturino says.
And naturally Toast knows her wedding day is not the time to reinvent your look, so she's planning to get her signature chic shave with a blowout, all the while keeping the true meaning of the celebration in mind. "A dog wedding is very fun and very exciting, but the underlying purpose is that we're spreading awareness about what a puppy mill is," Sturino says. "The main point about why you shouldn't buy a dog from a pet store or online is that they come from dogs like Toast who are overbred. Toast and her sisters Muppet and Underpants are all former puppy mill breeding moms, so to bring awareness on a national level like this is a really great opportunity for us."
