Celebrity weddings tend to be extravagant, expensive, and emotional—so why would their proposals be any different? From Kanye's elaborate stadium proposal to the Clooneys' low-key yet so-sweet story, here's how your favorite celebrity couples got engaged.

Eudoxie Mbouguiengue and Ludacris
In December 2014, Ludacris whisked his girlfriend Eudoxie (plus family and friends) off in a private plane, from which he projected the words "Eudoxie will you marry me" on a field below. "She didn't say yes," the rapper captioned an Instagram collage that documented the proposal and his future wife's reaction. "She said HELL YES!" The couple didn't waste any time; they were married within weeks of the engagement and welcomed a baby girl in June.

Lauren Parsekian and Aaron Paul
Aaron Paul is a known romantic—at least, when it comes to his then-girlfriend (now wife) Lauren Parsekian—so of course their engagement story was like something out of a rom-com. On a New Year's trip to Paris, the Breaking Bad star popped the question on a stoop near the Eiffel Tower. "It's just this little courtyard outside of this hotel, and we were just dancing to Édith Piaf by ourselves on New Year's and then I begged her to marry me," Paul told People. We're guessing he didn't need to beg too hard. The couple tied the knot in a Paris-themed wedding in May 2013.

Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney
The handsome actor surprised his human rights lawyer girlfriend with a simple, sweet proposal at home, complete with a romantic dinner and meaningful music. "I was at my home and I queued up a playlist of some of my aunt Rosemary's songs and I asked, and she just kept saying, 'Oh my god' and 'Wow'—completely unexpected," Clooney spilled to CBS News. "And you know, I just said—I'm 53 at the time—'I've been on my knee now for 28 minutes, so I gotta get an answer out of this cause I'm gonna throw a hip out. I might not be able to stand back up.'" Happily, Alamuddin agreed, and the two married in Venice in September 2014.

Camila Alves and Matthew McConaughey
During an appearance on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, Matthew McConaughey recounted the details of his holiday engagement to model and mother of his children, Camila Alves. "During Christmastime we go around as a family and everyone gets their turn to open presents," McConaughey said. "I had wrapped the engagement ring in about eight different boxes deep so she'd have to keep opening boxes to get to it. And because we go around and swap out and take turns on who's opening presents, she had to get skipped the last 15 times. She kept going, 'Why can't I open that present?' And I said, 'You have to wait til the end.' Finally I get to her and I'm calling my family over ... and her eyes go wide and I take a knee and I said, 'Will you marry me and take my name?'" After a bit of consideration, Alves said yes, and the two wed in June 2012.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend
Things didn't go exactly as planned when John Legend proposed to Chrissy Teigen during a Christmas vacation in the Maldives. First, airport security almost spoiled the surprise when they opened Legend's bag to screen it. Then, the stars got into a fight en route (Teigen thought Legend only got her a cookbook and crock pot for Christmas!). And finally, when they got to the proposal site, a sand pit where they were to have dinner, Teigen had cramps and wasn't in the mood. But none of that mattered when the model discovered the cushion-cut diamond engagement ring set between two diamond eternity bands hidden in a dome under a pile of arugula. Legend asked, Teigen said yes, and the two made it official in a formal destination wedding in Lake Como, Italy.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Kanye West dreamed big when he proposed to Kim Kardashian. The over-the-top engagement took place in the AT&T Stadium San Francisco, where a 50-piece orchestra played Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful," fireworks filled the sky, and a Jumbotron read, "PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!" Friends and family hid in the dugout as West led a blindfolded Kardashian onto the field and presented her with a 15-carat, cushion cut diamond from jeweler Lorraine Schwartz, which he helped design.
The whole thing was captured on camera, of course, and aired months later on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. In May 2014, the pair married in a lavish ceremony at Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy.

Kate Middleton and Prince William
The way the Duke of Cambridge asked Kate Middleton to marry him was understated—and yet, still fit for, well, a princess. "He's a true romantic and we had a wonderful holiday in Africa and it was out there in a very quiet lodge and it was very romantic and it was very personal time for both of us," said the Duchess. The Duke gave Middleton the late Princess Diana's famous 12-carat oval sapphire engagement ring, but that was the only part of the proposal that was expected.
"I didn't really plan it that far in advance," Prince William said in an interview with CNN. "I just knew I wanted it to feel comfortable where I did it and I wanted it to mean something, other than just the act of getting engaged. She understands what it means to me being in Africa, and my love of conservation." The royals wed in April 2011, at Westminster Abbey in London, England.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake
The marriage that inspired the song "Mirrors" reportedly began with a romantic winter proposal during a snowy pre-Christmas getaway to Wyoming in December 2011. "Justin knows how much she loves snowboarding and the mountains, so it was the perfect place," a source told Us Weekly.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
Who says you can't both pop the question? That's what Neil Patrick Harris and his actor-chef partner David Burtka did, beginning with Burtka asking NPH on the exact street corner where they first met. "We were on our way to an event at an Indian casino 45 minutes out of town in a limousine, and David wanted to stop for some reason that I didn't quite get," Neil revealed to Out. "I thought he wanted to get some booze or something. And then he got on one knee and proposed, and I was so freaked out by it that I said, 'Yes,' but I didn't know what it meant." NPH wore an engagement ring on his right hand for a year before returning the favor, on Valentine's Day, in Santa Monica, and finally transferring the ring to his left hand when the two wed in a fairy-tale wedding in Italy, September 2014.

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski
There may not have been "unicorns and clouds" at John Krasinski and Emily Blunt's Los Angeles proposal, as The Office star joked to Access Hollywood, but we do know it was romantic and low-key, that Krasinski got down on one knee with a 3-carat Edwardian Neil Lane ring, and that the two of them shed happy tears. "She did cry after I cried and we cried and then everyone around us was crying," Krasinski said. "Then, I think people weren't really sure what was going on, but they were crying because we were crying. But it was great. At the end of the day she said 'yes,' which is great. It's a big part of this whole thing."

Pink and Carey Hart
Leave it to Pink to concoct a nontraditional (and unforgettable!) proposal. In 2005, she gave her motocross champion boyfriend, who was competing in the Pro 250 class finals, another reason to reach the finish line: by holding up a pit board that read "Will You Marry Me?" When Hart passed by and powered on to the next lap, she wrote another message, "I'm serious!" This time, Hart pulled over and picked up the singer-songwriter as an affirmative response. The cool couple tied the knot the following year, in January 2006.

Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady
On Christmas Eve, 2008, Tom Brady asked the supermodel to marry him while midair, somewhere between New York and Boston. The quarterback reportedly filled a private jet with four dozen white roses, Champagne, and Gisele's parents and gave his future bride an early Christmas gift: a solitaire 4-carat diamond. A very happy holiday, indeed!

Julia Roberts and Daniel Moder's engagement was a short one! The sneaky celebrities invited friends and family to their New Mexico ranch for a 4th of July barbecue that actually turned out to be a surprise proposal and wedding. To kick off the festivities, Moder got down on one knee and asked Roberts to marry him. The Pretty Woman actress replied, "yes, yes, yes" and they wed that very night. Talk about springing it on people!

Portia De Rossi and Ellen Degeneres
When the Arrested Development actress returned from a TV shoot with a pet goldfish, Degeneres seized the opportunity to propose. "We were watching the fish and she said, 'This is a pretty romantic moment, right?' And I said, 'Every moment with you is romantic,'" de Rossi said to People. "And then she gave me the ring"—a 3-carat marquise diamond accented by small pink diamonds, for the record. The pair tied the knot in August 2008.

Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
For their 19th wedding anniversary, Tim McGraw shared a video with the details of how he proposed to Faith Hill. In the clip, he returned to the scene, a dressing room trailer at the Taste of Country Festival in Grand Junction, Colorado. "It was rainy and stuff and we'd been on tour for a while together," McGraw said. "I'd joked around with her about getting married, and so ... I looked at her, I grabbed her by the hands before I went onstage. She had already done her show. And I said, 'I'm really serious. I want you to marry me' … She laughed and she said, 'We're at a country music festival in a trailer house and you're asking me to marry you?' And I said, 'Yeah.' So I went onstage."
When McGraw returned, he read Hill's answer, "Yes, I'm going to be your wife," which she had written with a marker on the mirror, surrounded by lipstick kisses. The country stars married on October 6, 1996 and now have three daughters: Gracie, Maggie, and Audrey.

Jenna Bush and Henry Hager
The daughter of President George W. Bush got engaged to her boyfriend, Henry Hager, in 2007 at sunrise, at the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park in Maine—"supposedly where the sun first hits the United States." But getting her there wasn't so easy: "I did not want to go hiking at 4 in the morning," she said. "It was freezing. But we got up, and we hiked in the dark for an hour and a half, and then when we got towards the top, with the sunrise, he asked me." Bush said "yes," then they both said "I do" in May 2008.
