11 Travel Tips from Brooke Saward of the World of Wanderlust
For this regular series, we reached out to some of our favorite travel bloggers to find out everything from their go-to gadgets and in-flight beauty secrets to the most romantic meal they've ever had. Because who better to share their insight about how to have an unforgettable honeymoon (or really, any future vacation as a married couple) than those who are constantly on the road?
What began as a personal travel blog for Australia native Brooke Saward has become a full-fledged online resource for travelers. With the help of eight writers around the world, World of Wanderlust features destination information, industry reviews (of hotels, airlines, cruises, to name a few), beauty tips, and beyond.
AISLE OR WINDOW?
Aisle for long haul, window for short haul.
TIPS FOR FITTING SOUVENIRS IN YOUR SUITCASE?
After so many trips and travels, I no longer buy souvenirs overseas. If I'm going to buy something I usually make it a home item that doesn't scream "I've been here!" like a nice candle or photo frame.
FAVORITE SOUVENIR FROM YOUR TRAVELS?
I recently carried a heavy eight-pack of slate coasters from Wales around Europe for six weeks, but seeing them on my dining room table now I don't regret a thing!
WHAT IS THE MOST ROMANTIC DESTINATION YOU'VE VISITED AND WHY?
Nihiwatu Resort on Sumba Island Indonesia. I went here with my boyfriend for his birthday and the whole experience was just a world away from reality. It was so fairytale-like that I was constantly pinching myself to make sure it wasn't a dream! We went on a full-day "spa safari" on a cliff-front luxury spa, rode horses at sunset, ate dinner by the ocean while surrounded by lanterns, and had a personal butler arrange a bathtub full of rose petals. It was just so idyllic.
MOST ROMANTIC MEAL?
Lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris was such a beautiful setting, amazing food, and great service.
TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR A LONG FLIGHT?
I usually try and get a good rest leading into the flight so that if I can't sleep I just stay awake and work on my laptop. I sometimes pack some healthy snacks in case the airplane food is so bad I don't want to eat it-which is often the case since I'm a bit of a foodie. The best airline I have ever flown in terms of food is Emirates; they also have unlimited snacks. Before I board, I'll usually try and find something of substance at the airport to ensure I'm not hungry on the flight.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE PLANNING A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME TRIP?
The Internet is full of all the resources you could ever need. To tailor your trip to your liking and discover amazing places, follow travel blogs or check their Pinterest boards-you'll always find plenty of inspiration! I also draw travel inspiration from bloggers in different spheres like fashion and food.
GO-TO TRAVEL APPS?
I love Uber, XE Currency exchange, and Kindle for iPhone, so I don't have to take heavy books overseas.
IN-FLIGHT BEAUTY TIPS?
Never wear make-up on a plane, use cleansing wipes before and after the flight since the water onboard is incredibly unhygienic. Always moisturize before and as well since your skin will inevitably dry out. And don't forget to drink plenty of water!
I usually try to sleep on the plane on the time zone I am flying into. If I'm still struggling when I arrive, I try to stay awake all day-fresh air and outdoor explorations always make this much easier. I also like to have a shower as soon as I arrive as it refreshes me and wakes me up so that I can hit the ground running. The sooner you adjust to your new time zone, the better!
