"Orange is my favorite color," says the bride, an actress and a singer who met her husband, a director-producer, in 2012. Sensing a theme, this couple turned to incorporating a citrus motif into their fun-filled California celebration.
The Couple
"Orange you glad" might be a punch line, but it also sums up Jackie Seiden and Jason Winer's fabulously fruit-filled celebration at the Parker Palm Springs, a midcentury-style hotel in the California desert town. "Orange is my favorite color, and the hotel's logo is an orange with a leaf," says Jackie, an actress and a singer who met her husband, a director-producer, at an acting workshop in Los Angeles in 2012. "We even had our first meeting with our planners at a café called Clementine." Sensing they were more than onto a theme, the couple incorporated a citrus motif into their day, from the invites to the escort cards. Dwarf orange trees dotted the ceremony site, and centerpieces starring oranges were almost entirely edible. "People were eating from them throughout the night and left with loads of fruit," recalls Jackie. "The kids there thought that was amazing!"
To keep their 180 guests of all ages cool in the 90-degree heat, tangerine-colored parasols provided shade, and ice water and lemonade were on offer. The casual Jewish service was led by a close friend, actor Adam Shapiro (dubbed "The Shabbi" for the occasion). "It was contemporary and hilarious," says Jackie. Along with laughter, there were tears—of the happy variety. "When I saw her in her dress at the top of the aisle, she just looked so gorgeous," recalls Jason. "We made eye contact, and I tried really hard not to cry—unsuccessfully!"
Later, the crowd moved to an indoor ballroom for a dinner of seared sea bass, New York strip steak, and butternut squash risotto, then an ice-cream-and-sundae dessert bar. ("We didn't want to slow the party down for a cake-cutting," says Jason.) The newlyweds twirled to "When a Man Loves a Woman," danced the hora, and watched as Jackie's family serenaded them with Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds," which, she says, "got the whole place going." The fun continued into the wee hours of the morning. Luckily, back at their rooms, guests had a Jackie-and-Jason-designed hangover kit stocked with Emergen-C and clementine sodas, naturally.
The Invitation
The stationery suite, designed by Pitbulls and Posies, combined a modern font, ornate calligraphy by Emily J. Snyder, and a whimsical illustration of an orange.
A Furry Important Guest
Ollie, the couple's papillon, donned a bow tie for the occasion.
The Fashions
Jason, wearing Band of Outsiders, and Jackie, in a lace Inbal Dror dress, were all smiles after their I do's.
Just for Kicks
Jason bought Jackie her first pair of Converse sneakers when they were dating. As a special treat on the big day, he got her a new pair. She, in turn, presented her sister with a matching pair and her sisters-in-law with wedge-heeled versions.
The Ceremony
The duo married beneath a huppa twined with bay leaves and kumquats. "During the ceremony, we threw out any preconceived notions of how it should go," Jason recalls. "If we wanted to laugh or give a hug, we did. It helped us stay present."
Special Guests
In a twist on the traditional Jewish seven blessings, Jackie and Jason asked close friends to speak on a virtue important to marriage. The resulting speeches were both emotional and funny. Pal Ali Larter and her husband, comedian Hayes MacArthur (right), delivered a laugh-out-loud bit on the benefit of humor.
The Bridal Party
Jackie's sister (fourth from left) served as maid of honor, and her two sisters-in-law (left) stood up as bridesmaids. The flower girls are nieces of the couple's.
The Bridesmaids' Bouquets
Bridesmaids wore ivory dresses and carried bouquets of garden roses, spirea, coral peonies, kumquats, and ginkgo.
Edible Escort "Cards"
Laser-cut acrylic "leaves," etched with guests' names and table numbers, were affixed to real tangerines to serve as escort cards.
The Cocktail Hour
Actress Busy Philipps and her husband, Marc Silverstein, kicked back during the cocktail hour, lounging on the hotel's lawn chairs (perfectly in palette with their lime-green cushions).
Citrusy Centerpieces
Décor art at the hotel inspired the table numbers, which were surrounded by glass bowls of citrus and greenery.
Everybody Dance Now
Jackie and Jason were hoisted up for the hora. "I have some family friends that dance the hora aggressively," laughs Jackie.
A Citrus Fix
On-theme hangover kits helped guests revive postparty.
