Courtney and Peter’s Honeymoon Escapade Across Italy
Courtney and Peter Chan, of Los Angeles, married June 22, 2013, in a sparkly affair at The London West Hollywood. “There were confetti canons!” says Courtney, a teacher.
She and Peter, a video game project manager, waited a month to time their Roman adventure to her summer break.
Trip length: 12 nights
Breakdown: Three in Rome, three in Sorrento (with day trips to Positano and Capri), two in Ravello, two in Florence, and a final two in Rome.
Flight time: 13 hours from L.A. to Rome
Hotel They’d Move Into If They Could
Ravello’s Hotel Caruso (from $765/night), with its cliff-clinging infinity pool. “It was breathtaking,” Courtney says. “Literally. We gasped when we saw it.” Their tip: Claim your pool chaises early before they fill up.
“Ravello was the most memorable,” Peter says. “ Those views! But we had the most fun soaking up the history in Rome.” Then there was the day trip to Capri. “Everywhere we turned there was a tree with huge lemons hanging off it,” Courtney says.
Rome’s 5 Must-Hit Sites
The Colosseum; Vatican (Peter suggests booking a private tour to skip the line); Villa Borghese gardens (“We rented a cute yellow tandem bike and puttered all over,” recalls Courtney); Spanish Steps; Trevi Fountain (“at night, when it’s a totally different experience,” she specifies).
Most Mouthwatering Meals
The pair went for the sweet stuff up to four times a day. As certified connoisseurs, they can vouch that the watermelon flavor at Raki in Sorrento was the very best.
“I learned how to say, ‘How much is this?’ [quanto costa],” Courtney says. “Consequently, I learned how to say ‘too much’ [troppo],” Peter quips.
What They Wish They Had Brought Back
“More of the leather sandals they’ll tailor to your feet in Florence,” says Courtney, who also eyed straw hats. “So many chic people had Borsalinos.”
