A Vintage and Whimsical Black-and-Gold Destination Wedding in Canada
Nicole and Chris
When Nicole and Chris met back in 2005, the connection was instant. A little more than seven years later, they made it official, on October 12, 2012, not far from their Ontario home in Cambridge, Canada.
A Lovely Location
Eighty guests joined Nicole and Chris on that brisk sunny day to witness their nuptials. The location? The Cambridge Mill in the bride's hometown in which the bride grew up. The mill-turned-restaurant's warm woods and old stones provided beautiful textures to set an understated ambiance with woodland and whimsical touches.
Heirloom garden roses, lisianthus, sweetheart roses, ranunculus, veronica, and seeded eucalyptus intermingled with black-centered anemone's in the bride's bouquet, which was finished off with gold beaded trim.
Raw cotton and gold millinery leaves were incorporated into the boutonnieres, which were tied with leather.
A Precious Pup
Nacho, the pair's beloved dog, made an appearance for photos.
Floral Ceremony Backdrop
Inspired by the anemones in Nicole's bouquet, giant paper flowers were crafted for a special arch to anchor the ceremony spot. The bride entered the room as The Cure's "Friday, I'm In Love" played—a subtle nod to the day of the week.
Bells topped off ribbon wands for revelers to wave as the couple walked up the aisle as husband and wife. Tags attached to each read: "When the bride and groom walk your way, wave your wand and shout hooray!"
The couple posed for photos before and again after the ceremony with their photographer, Elizabeth Kaye of Beth and Ty In Love.
A View to Remember
Outside Cambridge Mill—which features retractable glass doors to make an open-air setting—was a remarkable vista of the Grand River.
Guests moved to another room for the seated dinner, which was a feast of local fare.
In addition to striped straws, sparkly stir sticks were on hand to jazz up cocktails.
Mercury glass votives surrounded small arrangements of white blooms to light the reception tables.
A golden garland spelling out "Oh Happy Day" dressed the a mantle and "kept the spirit of the celebration going," Nicole said.
Dance Floor Decor
Designer and planner Rhiannon Banda of Hey Gorgeous Events created an installation of spray-painted feathers threaded to wooden dowels. It hung over the dance floor and added a subtle dreamcatcher-esque feeling to the area where the newlyweds first danced to Beach House's "Take Care."
A digital Polaroid camera was on hand so guests could post photos with their well wishes for the couple on a blackboard-painted canvas.
Instead of a wedding cake, the couple served their favorite treat: donuts. A variety of the holed confection was set up on pedestals atop a table decorated with gilded garland.
Miniature hand soaps in the shape and scent of vanilla donuts were a nod to the sweet wedding dessert spread. Like the escort cards, they featured a subtle floral pattern.
