This Quincy, Washington, Wedding Is Proof That Less Really Is More

As sophomores in college, Micaela and Curtis ditched a fraternity party to talk until the sun came up—just talk. It was a special night for each of them, but Micaela required one more encounter to know for sure. Soon after, the two enjoyed another evening of talking (and a little dancing), and she was convinced. "I knew he was the one I was going to marry," she says.

Five years later, Curtis popped the question on a rose-petal strewn beach—with a blanket and celebratory bottle of Champagne ready to go. "I dropped to one knee and tears streamed down Micaela's face," Curtis recalls. "She said 'yes' before I even opened my mouth."

On July 5, 2019, the couple exchanged vows in front of 173 guests at Cave B in Quincy, Washington. Micaela and Curtis had loved their venue from afar long before they were engaged, and booked it 16 months before their big day. Cave B overlooks the Gorge and Columbia River, where the couple spent many romantic weekends—including that second all-night talk that convinced Micaela she was in love. "We had to go back to where we fell in love and share the special place with our family and friends," she says.

With the help of wedding planning team Callista & Company, the couple created what they describe as a romantic, timeless, and ever-so-slightly contemporary fête that incorporated linen fabrics and natural hues that complemented the landscape, like sand, apricot, and mauve.

Micaela and Curtis teamed up to design her engagement ring, an oval diamond set in a pavé band. The final result, however, was still a surprise for the bride. "I didn't see the actual ring until we got engaged," she says.

A Special Accessory

Curtis wore a classic black tuxedo with a very special accessory: Micaela embroidered the couple's custom crest onto a handkerchief, then presented it to him on the big day. Because she used blue thread, it also served as their something blue, she explains.

"We ended up using it when we exchanged our handwritten notes, said our vows, and when our best man gave his speech," she says.

"Curtis and I didn't want our bridesmaids to have matching dresses because we wanted them to look natural and complement each of their styles," says Micaela. Using their flower color palette as inspiration, the couple asked their friends to pick the Jenny Yoo and Joanna August dresses they loved most.
