This bourbon-based cocktail is the perfect drink for a Kentucky Derby viewing or cocktail party.

Refreshing and strong, this classic southern cocktail is a must on Derby Day, or any summer gathering. The cocktail starts with muddled mint leaves mixed with lemon juice and sugar, which is then mixed with bourbon and ice. A sprig of mint is the perfect garnish.

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons superfine sugar

  • 6 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

  • 24 mint leaves, plus 4 sprigs for garnish

  • 2 cups finely crushed ice

  • 1 cup bourbon

Directions

  1. Muddle mint leaves:

    Combine sugar, lemon juice, and mint leaves in a pitcher. Crush well with a wooden spoon.

  2. Add bourbon, mix, and serve:

    Add ice and bourbon and mix well. Pour into silver tumblers, garnish with mint sprigs, and serve.
