Charity Registry
![]() You're happily engaged, so why not share the love? The popularity of registering for a charity is on the rise, thanks in part to older couples getting hitched (assuming that they already have all the tableware and linens they could possibly want) and the economic downturn. Setting up a charitable registry is "very similar to setting up a registry at a department store," says Joan Ochi, marketing communications director at GlobalGiving. When choosing a foundation, brides often look for a link to their personal experience. For instance, a couple with a Brazilian-born groom might register for a South America-based charity, whereas a bride whose family was affected by cancer might decide to donate to the American Cancer Society. In general, guests donate money, after which the newlywed couple receives a card about the gift (each website's process differs slightly, however). And if you were looking forward to receiving those housewares, don't worry, you can compromise! Some sites, like WeddingChannel.com, will donate a percentage -- you determine the amount -- of the traditional registry proceeds to the organization of your choice. GlobalGiving.com: Love animals? Provide shelter for neglected horses, or help feed orphaned baby cheetahs. IDoFoundation.org: Crazy for kids? Give to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, or gift children with books. JustGive.org: Eco-minded? Support your national parks, or even donate fruit trees to underprivileged families. Planning Tools
