We all know someone who got married in the '80s, and their wedding photos show off everything from headbands and puffy taffeta sleeves to the trendiest makeup of the decade. While fashion and beauty preferences surely change over time, you can make sure you'll love your wedding photos forever by avoiding anything overly-trendy, especially when it comes to your big-day makeup look. Just like an '80s bride might now wish she picked a more subdued lipstick or went easier on the eyeshadow, contemporary brides should think twice before choosing a bridal beauty look that includes too many of 2017's biggest makeup trends. Here, today's beauty trends to avoid on the wedding day—at least for the portraits and ceremony!

How to Be Big-Day Beautiful From Every Angle

Smoky Eye

The smoky eye can look so beautiful in editorial photos, but can be extremely heavy in real life. Some brides think they want a dramatic smoky eye on the big day, but when their makeup artist actually applies it they are horrified because they look completely different than they have ever looked before. You want to look like the very best version of yourself on your wedding day, not a whole new person, so if you've never worn a smoky eye before, your wedding day is not the day to try it.

Glitter

Although it seems fun and glitzy, glitter can look very juvenile. A very soft shimmer or micro-fine glitter swept over the lid lightly can work, but chunky glitter on the eyelids or anywhere else on the face screams, "I am going to Coachella after this wedding."

Contour

This trend just won't die. Contour is great when it's done subtly using bronzers and highlight, but when it's striped on using a "contour palette," you likely won't love how you look in person. Sure, your professional photos will look great, but all your guests will see is heavy contour lines caked onto your face. Skip it.

Too Much Highlighter

Highlighter will make you look just as glowy and gorgeous in person as it will in your photos. But be warned: A heavy application can make you look wet and shiny. You'll also need to be mindful of which highlighter you choose, as certain types don't photograph as well as others. Be strategic in your product choice and your application so that you don't end up looking like a disco ball on the biggest day of your life.

Glossy Lids

This trend, which has been perfected by Kylie Jenner, is a tricky one. The look involves applying a clear gloss or Vaseline over your eye shadow to create a shiny look. It's difficult to achieve in general and, even if you can get it right, it's extremely unlikely that it will stay on throughout the night. Skip this trend and opt for something more natural with tons of staying power.
