While speaking with Access Hollywood about the end of her fiancé Michael Phelps's Olympic career, former Miss California 2010 Nicole Johnson dished on wedding details—and her future mother-in-law, Debbie Phelps, revealed that she always knew they would end up together. The couple started dating back in 2007 and have endured a few rough patches but always ended up together on the other side. Even when Johnson and Phelps thought things were finished, Debbie knew he shouldn't let her go.

"But they had to figure that out themselves, and they had to mature," Debbie said. "But Michael knew when he would bring someone around me—he could read it on my face. 'You don't like her, do you?' 'No I don't.'" Then gesturing to Nicole, she said, "'Do you like her?' 'Yeah, I do!' And then when he called me and said, 'I'm getting back with Nicole," ... I said, 'That's where you should be.' He said, 'I'm determined to make this happen,' and I said, 'And that's what I want you to do.'"

Moms always know. "When we finally did [get back together]," Johnson said, "it was still a little rocky in figuring things out and figuring each other out because it had been some time, but we didn't miss a beat and we're happy and we've been back together ever since … and now we have a little one and a wedding at the end of this year."

Phelps shares similar sentiments. "I said to a couple of my friends if I ever had the chance to get her back, that would be it," Phelps said to USA Today last year. "She was the one I loved the most. Her and I have been on and off for eight years. It's been a long time. We've been through a lot. But I love her to death. We've been able to grow as a couple through everything we've been through, the positive changes I've made in my life," he gushed. "I never wanted to have a, 'What if?' I just told her exactly how I felt," he said. "I was like, as long as I can tell her that, I can go through my life and be happy. Whatever happens, happens. Obviously we worked through some things. There's nobody in the world I would rather be with." Michael Phelps: summing up all of our feelings in three sentences. You're a lucky girl, Nicole!

Signs You've Found "The One"

Phelps and Johnson got engaged in February 2015 and welcomed a son, Boomer, in May 2016. Since then, they've been busy with their newborn—and with Phelps's Olympics wins. And though that gold band she was wearing in Rio had us wondering if they had already said "I do," the wedding is still to come.

When? Johnson confirmed that the couple has set a date—sometime at the end of this year. "It'll be small and intimate for the wedding and then we're throwing a massive bash for everyone in the states," Johnson said. So, destination wedding? "We're kind of getting things rolling," she continued. "I've been planning as we've been leading up to this. I think I have the wedding in order and now it's on to the party for the fun."

Last-Minute Details That Will Transform Your Wedding

Beyond the big day, Johnson said that she and Phelps want to give Boomer a sibling … eventually. Right now, they probably just want to relax after the past few crazy months: A baby, 6 Olympic medals, and wedding planning is a lot of work.
