When deciding whether to wear your hair up or down for your wedding, consider this: updos stay neater longer, and they really flatter your bone structure and neckline. But while severe, overly styled wedding hair is stay-proof, it's not always pretty. Here, we break down how to get the best of both worlds: a wedding updo that lasts all night and looks hair-commercial worthy.

Before the Wedding

The night before your hair trial, make sure not to over condition or apply a mask to your hair. "This can result in hair that is too soft and weighed down and will not hold a style," says Chelle Neff, owner of Urban Betty Hair Salon in Austin, Texas. She also recommends arriving to your appointment early and with dry hair. This allows time have a proper consultation, and cuts out unnecessary time taking up by hair drying.

On the day of your hair trial, pay attention to how long it takes to style so you'll know how much time you'll need to allot on the day of the wedding. Be sure to note how well the hairdo holds up in case you need to make any last minute changes.

Some stylists will tell you to not wash your hair the day of your wedding. Instead, shampoo it the day before and use only a light conditioning rinse. Any greasiness can be covered up with dry shampoo (bonus: it'll give your hair more texture for styles to hold on to!).

While Getting Ready

Neff recommends wearing a button-down shirt to your appointment on the day of the event. "This will help preserve your beautiful new 'do when you are trying to get dressed later in the day," she says.

If you have curly hair, make sure that you have given yourself a great blow out prior to your hair appointment on your big day. But do not use a flat iron before getting a updo, according to Neff. "That can make it hard to hold curl and stay pinned in place."

The right tools and finishing products can also help keep your wedding-day 'do in place and looking beautiful. Try Bombshell Collection Rubberized Bobby Pins—they have a grip-like coating so they won't slip out—and just a spritz of firm-hold hair spray. Remember: too much product will make the style lose its charm. If you typically don't use finishing spray, try one of our favorites:

  • BlowPro After Blow Strong Hold Finishing Spray, $19.75;

During the Wedding

If your hair does slip out during a mid-dance-floor dip, be sure to keep a travel hairspray and have it in your clutch at all times. "This allows for touchups throughout the night. Dancing can get you all sweaty and this is a great way to tame those flyaways that can pop up later," says Neff.
