It's difficult to mentally grasp how quickly my Invisalign® treatment has gone. Eight months ago I was both thrilled and terrified after signing up for this journey with Martha Stewart Weddings and Invisalign. For the longest time I'd been wanting to improve my smile and close my diastema (or gap between my teeth) but I was too chicken to go through with it. Several unpleasant thoughts went through my head: What if they look terrible on me? What if I'm in pain all day? Will this interfere with my speech? How will my fiancé react? And my coworkers—will they judge me? I went online and researched different types of braces, from traditional to incognito braces that are placed on the back of your teeth, to Invisalign aligners. By far the most popular and preferred method was Invisalign, so I closed my eyes and dove in feet first.
Twelve aligners later (with only five more to go) and I couldn't be happier with my results. I will admit my first set of aligners were painful. Thankfully I read reviews from other Invisalign users prior to starting and they warned me this might happen so I wasn't shocked. Two to three days after my start date I was much more comfortable as my teeth began to shift into position. From then on it became more and more bearable, so much so that I often forgot I was wearing them.
Looking back on my first day with Invisalign, it’s almost comical to think about how nervous I was to speak or smile in front of family or friends. I learned over time that people couldn't tell (and still can't tell) that I was wearing Invisalign aligners. Since then, my aligners have become a part of me. I laugh, smile, and talk just as I would without them. I'm not even self-conscious about removing them before eating in public places. Don't get me wrong, I'm not just pulling them out and slobbering at the table, I excuse myself and then remove them. But more importantly, I’ve stopped caring about having to take them out because I think about how beneficial it is that I have the luxury of being able to remove them. If I had gone the traditional braces route, where I was forced to limit the food I ate, I would be miserable. Thankfully with Invisalign that is not a concern.
Another thing I don't have to worry about is my appearance in my wedding day photos. In the beginning of this journey I remember being so anxious about how my smile would photograph, but this experience has literally changed me. I am no longer worried about my smile or what people think of it. I'm just happily living in the moment and in three short, wonderful months I will be celebrating my successful Invisalign treatment and my wedding day—all while rocking the brand new accessory that I get to keep for the rest of my life… my new smile!
