Bridal Beauty Diaries: Tiana – A Taste of What's to Come

Tiana and her fiance travel to Oakland for their wedding menu tasting and one wonderful surprise.

Have you ever wondered what it must have felt like back in the medieval times when kings sat amongst friends at a long wooden table covered in plates filled with more food than any man could want? True gluttony at its finest! Well I was lucky enough to experience a taste of that a few weeks ago when my fiancé and I flew into Oakland, California to try the food we desired for our wedding day. Lucky enough for me that weekend was also my 30th birthday, so it was truly a dream come true.

We kicked off this food-filled weekend with our rehearsal dinner location—Marc 49, a small wine bar that serves Mediterranean and Spanish style meals. When we walked through to the back of the restaurant, we were greeted by a gorgeous outdoor patio with hanging lights, soft music, and beautiful natural wood details. Similar to the venue, the food also exceeded our expectations. We started out with goat cheese and caramelized onion bruschetta and ended with seafood paella that was out of this world!

After Marc 49, we fast forwarded to dessert. We're not big cake fans so we decided for our wedding we would offer guests our favorite desserts. I love the banana cheesecakes made by Rachel Marshall from Divine Slice so we are definitely going with that. Bora is a fan of éclairs, so after testing out a couple bakeries in Oakland, we landed on La Farine. Oh Em Gee! The fresh cream, natural chocolate, and soft puff of pastry is perfection.

Finally we rolled ourselves over to our wedding venue, the Terrace Room, to taste the actual meal we would have during the reception. Chef Todd greeted us immediately and explained every detail of every course—from the fresh hors d'oeuvres, to the impressive plating of the pear salad, to the final entrees. I barely had time to remove my Invisalign aligners to dig in! As I removed them, the sous chef took notice and mentioned how he just started his Invisalign treatment three weeks ago. It was a nice moment of comradery.

There was very little we didn't like. Chef Todd recommended we think about it over some complimentary glasses of wine, so we walked to the bar area. While there, a man in jeans and a sweatshirt walked over to the baby grand piano and played nearly every song in the "Cotton Club Jazz" playlist I've secretly and carefully been putting together in preparation for the wedding. And believe it or not, his singing voice was almost identical to Nat King Cole! Just when I thought things couldn't get any better, he began to play the first song my fiancé and I ever danced to, "At Last" by Etta James. Without much thought Bora stood up, reached his hand out for mine, and we began to dance. It was such a euphoric moment. Once the dancing came to an end, Bora and I looked at each other, nodded in agreement, greeted the mysterious pianist, and asked if he would play at our wedding. It was a no brainer. I hope magical moments like that continue to happen through this planning process.
