Sunprint Place Mat

Give the sun's rays double exposure with projects that dress up tables and bring sweetness and light to your ceremony.

Martha Stewart Weddings, Summer 2013

To make this charming mat and escort card, use the Super Sunprint Kit. We spread maidenhair ferns on the kit’s blue paper, left it near a window, and just a few minutes later watched this pattern emerge. Then, we scanned the print, changed the tint in iPhoto (PC users can tap Google’s Picasa), and copied it on 11-by-17-inch paper.

Tools and Materials

Sunprint paper and acrylic overlay (we used Sunprint Kit)
Assorted leaves
11-by-17-inch text weight paper

You can download and print our pattern, or you can make your own:

  1. Away from direct sunlight, lay a sheet of sunprint paper on a piece of cardboard and place leaves on paper in your desired pattern. Lay a piece of acrylic on top of leaves and paper to flatten.
  2. Expose paper to sunlight until the paper turns almost white, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the acrylic top and leaves and rinse paper with water until the background turns blue again; let dry.
  3. Scan the sunprint to your computer and open the image with a photo-editing program, like iPhoto or Google’s Picasa. Change the tint of the image until desired background color is reached.
  4. Print place mats onto paper from your home computer, or save the image to a flash drive and have your local office-supplies store print them for you.
