Tools and Supplies
Powdered dye, such as Procion MX Dye
Bucket
Rubber gloves
Coffee filters
Needle and thread
Monofilament fishing line
How-To
- In a plastic bucket, mix your dye with water according to the label's instructions.
- Wearing rubber gloves, dunk a large stack of coffee filters into the dye until they are saturated.
- Remove filters and wring them out over the bucket.
- Toss the colored filters in your dryer for a few minutes for a textured look -- no more than 10 minutes at most -- or let them air-dry for a more ruffled effect.
- Stack 12 together, and connect the layers by pulling a needle and thread through the center. Use your fingers to fluff up the edges like rosettes.
- Once you've got a bunch of puffs, string them on fishing line and tie knots on either side to keep them in place.

Such a great idea! I'm making these too. The tip on the crimping beads was very helpful.
Also, I started by sewing the filters together in the center but after 60 or so switched to a stapler. It's less likely to pull through and you can't see the staples when the pom poms are fluffed up.
I will be decorating our tent with this garland,,thanks for the wonderful idea.
I have found not all coffee filters are the same. I bought 2 different brands. A store brand accepted the dye wonderfully, nice rich color but the other (pure brew)came out streaked and had brown patches...no matter how long I dyed them.
I am stringing the filters straight onto the fishing line placing a crimping bead between the groups of 12 filters crimping them down to hold and "tie" the flowers in place
