Wendy, a clothing designer and artist, and Ben, a music producer and sound engineer, met as teenagers. Four years later, the Atlanta-based creatives were married in the groom's parents' backyard garden in Athens, Georgia. The May 29, 2011, nuptials were intimate, Southern, and full of handmade touches.
The invite suite, designed by Wendy and letterpressed by Smokey Road Press, had stitched elements that nodded to the bride's fashion background and love of textiles. It also reflected the couple officially weaving their lives together. A map designed by the bride's friend, Lena Corwin, added a pop of color.
A tote bag silkscreened with one of Wendy's designs was filled with local goodies. It included Red Mule Grits, pralines from Savannah, glass-bottled Coke, homemade cheese straws from Ben's aunt, and the cheese straw recipe so guests could make them at home.
Wendy wore an Ulla-Maija Couture gown of French Alencon lace over beige silk-charmeuse. She added a sash made by her friend, couturier Chris Hudson.
Ben's suit was custom-made by Sid Mashburn.
Shannah Montgomery of ZoomWorks snapped shots of the couple around the grounds.
Wendy's sister-in-law, Rinne Allen, made the bridal bouquet of peonies, Queen Anne's lace, gardenias, hellebores, lamb's ear, geraniums, maple seed pods, wild grasses, white spray roses, lilies of the valley, dahlias, and veronica. The stems were bound with a strip of blue ikat fabric for "something blue." Additional flower arrangements were assembled with help from the Junior Ladies Garden Club of Athens
.
Tamar Mogendorff, a friend of the couple's, crafted a pair of birds to attach the rings to during the ceremony.
Lee Epting of Epting Events provided a basket of fans for the outdoor ceremony.
Ben composed all of the music for the ceremony, which was then arranged for strings by his friend James Salter. The ceremony itself was performed by Rev. Micheal Selleck.
The couple walked back up the aisle guests waved ribboned sticks gathered from friends' and families' yards.
Wendy's friend, Llubav Choy Duerr, designed a custom guestbook that featured the wedding's stitched details and color palette. She found inspiration in the garland-lined pathway.
Woven chargers and ceramic plates were topped with napkins tied with gold ribbon and fabric butterflies made from Ikat fabric Wendy collected during trips to Asia. She began doing fabric origami nine years earlier, when she helped her sister-in-law design a wedding dress, and has been making shadow boxes, mobiles, hair pins, and large art installations ever since.
The table runners were screenprinted with a pattern that mimicked rows of stitching by Satisfactory. The pattern, inspired by Indian "gudari" quilts, extended over the ends of each table, where large numbers were stenciled.
Dinner took place under a tent at sunset. The 175 guests enjoyed Southern fare prepared by Epting Events: a local-greens salad, barbecue sliders, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, squash casserole, roasted beet salad, cornbread, and cheese biscuits.
Wendy and Ben danced to "Sleepwalk" by Santo and Johnny, which was performed by the band Yacht Rock
