Honeymoon Diary: Australia
Two newlyweds share photos of their Australian honeymoon adventures.
California attorneys Meghan and John-Kai travel as much as their busy schedules allow. So on the heels of their November 2010 destination wedding in Costa Rica, they took off for Australia. "I went after college and absolutely loved it, and Meg had always wanted to go," says John-Kai. "We're so glad we chose it. We were looking for adventure, exploration, and relaxation, and that's exactly what we got."
"We road-tripped up the coast, stopping at cool places along the way and taking little side excursions. We never stayed more than two nights at any hotel," says John-Kai of their 10-day trip. "Then we flew out of Cairns, about 1,050 miles from where we'd started."
Here, the couple held a new friend at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane.
Twice they dove the Great Barrier Reef. "Our most memorable wildlife experience was being 60 feet down and seeing a six-foot shark circling just 30 feet away," Meghan says.
Before they brought home this didgeridoo (an indigenous instrument), John-Kai got a lesson: "you've got to breathe in through your nose at the same time you're blowing out through your mouth!" he says.
Koalas aren't the only residents at Brisbane's preserve -- kangaroos live there too.
The newlyweds bought these boomerangs in Kuranda Village.
Noosa Heads: "Just outside this town, which was really cute, by the way -- great shopping -- there were these awesome trails to remote beaches. If you kept your eyes to the trees, you'd see wild koalas hanging out," says Meghan.
Daintree Rainforest: "The forest was lush and full of adventure," says John-Kai. "To get there, we had to drive onto a ferry to cross a river filled with crocodiles. We also saw a few cassowaries, which are huge flightless birds."
Fraser Island: "There are hidden lakes with crystal-clear water, wild dingoes wandering the beaches and forests, and tons of off-road tracks," says Meghan. "We took a guided excursion, but next time we'd go it alone."
Peppers Beach Club & Spa in Palm Cove: "It wasn't high season, so we'd drive until we found an interesting city, explore a few hotels, and book the one we liked best. This resort turned out to be incredible! We had a hot tub on our balcony that overlooked the ocean," says John-Kai.
Food@Eumundi: "Between Brisbane and Noosa Heads we grabbed breakfast at this little cafe in the artsy town of Eumundi," Meghan says. "A warm, welcoming young couple own it, and we still dream about their French toast."
