"Boy meets girl. Boy proposes. Proposes both marriage and that they purchase his abandoned childhood summer camp to be wed at. Girl accepts on both counts."
That's how Tereasa and David tell their love story. The Chicago-based couple set off on a mad dash to restore the camp to its former glory just in time for them to tie the knot there.

Tereasa, who is now the creative director at advertising and marketing agency Ogilvy & Mather, and David, who is the managing director and executive creative director of The Royal Order of Experience Design, were introduced by an old boss when they worked at another advertising agency. Once they knew their wedding would take place at the rejuvenated campgrounds of David's youth, they used their creativity to plan their camp-themed wedding. Mixing in seersucker, sunshine, and daisies with traditional elements of summer camp, the wedding turned out even better than planned.

Originally opened in 1926, Camp Wandawega in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, features 25 acres of lakefront property. While it has had several reincarnations, it had once served as a retreat for the nearby Latvian community. David (who is half Latvian) and his family vacationed at the rustic resort every summer since his birth.
But the property had suffered years of neglect, and the only real visitors were the native wildlife. After purchasing the camp in February 2004, the couple (and their extremely helpful wedding party) took six months to resurrect the abandoned camp.
The lake resort now serves as a fully functional event space, where Tereasa and David host annual events and weekend escapes with their friends.

For their wedding stationery, Tereasa and David took the custom route with Hatch Show Print. The Nashville-based retro-poster designers created a wood-cut for the invitation and silk-screen postcards for the RSVP card and save-the-date. The invitation and RSVP card were packaged in a kraft-paper envelope with an old map of the Wandawega resort, and wrapped in a gingham ribbon fastened with a patch.

Upon arrival at the camp, guests were greeted by a 1955 Mercury Monterrey. The couple shares a love for vintage cars and motorcycles, so it was only fitting that they park one from their collection on the property. The "D.H. + T.S." sign felt very much like a craft project made at camp and was flanked by bundles of daisies.

The ceremony was held at an outdoor church perched atop a hill and overlooking the lake. Tereasa, carrying a bouquet of daisies, and her father, Tom Surratt, walked down the aisle to Elvis's "Can't Help Falling in Love," played on the guitar by Nicholas Barron.

Even though the day was rain-filled, Tereasa and David still describe their wedding as being the color of sunshine, due in part to the yellow rain slickers, the abundance of daisies, and the bride's rain boots. But they claim -- and rightfully so -- that sunshine is very much a state of mind. The more rain that fell from the sky, the merrier they became. "If it's true that a wet knot is stronger, then we are the Arnold Schwartzenegger of knots," Tereasa said.

David's brother Herb Hernandez and his daughter Taylor celebrate with sparklers. Each guest received a custom-printed box of matches and some sparklers as part of the wedding favor. They also received a CD mix of the couple's favorite songs featuring a design that matched the invitation.

Tereasa and David utilized the skills of their talented photographer friends to capture their wedding weekend. For their portraits, the couple decided to take advantage of the lay of the land (and the lay of the lake). Because of the rain, they took their outdoor potraits in the sunshine of the next day -- when they also hosted a celebratory brunch and some additional camp activities. Guests gathered for croquet on the lawn and a cruise on the lake.

The brunch menu included egg strata with sweet onion, goat cheese, and thyme; grilled sausages served with tomato jam, mustard, pickled onions, and salsa; oven-roasted potatoes with garlic and rosemary; plenty of coffee cakes and muffins; and mimosas.
