While on vacation in France with her boyfriend, Larry Ward, in 2001, Lenore Welby was lying on the bed in her hotel room, exhausted from a day of sightseeing. Suddenly she felt something drop onto her stomach. She opened her eyes to see a small box and her boyfriend on his knee about to propose. "I couldn't believe it," says Lenore. "I thought there would be some big discussion and lots of planning, but then -- boom! -- here was this little box on my belly!"

In the bride's bouquet, tiny pinecones and evergreen sprigs are ringed with marabou.

The bride and groom kneel during their traditional Roman Catholic nuptial mass. Lenore's mother made the veil, edging it with lace from the veil she had worn at her own wedding 30 years earlier.

The couple's family gathers outside the New York Academy of Sciences, where the reception was held.

A small tree at the entrance to the reception greets guests; glass compotes hold the favors -- ornaments made from vintage Christmas postcards.

Above the mantle hangs a monogram made from glittered pinecones dusted with powdered snow ("LW" happens to be both the bride's and groom's initials); below it are glass cylinders filled with mini pinecones and candles.

The winsome wedding cake is decorated with paper trees and "snowballs" piped from frosting and topped with a marzipan snowman and snow-woman holding a replica of Lenore's bouquet.
