California-based sweethearts Andria Ledon and Jeff Sato hosted a stunning destination wedding in Kauai. The summer nuptials took their cue from the natural surroundings and beauty of the Hawaiian island.
Andria and Jeff's mutual love of the ocean played a big part in their wedding. The couple chose to wed by the water, at a private estate located in Kilauea. Their 50 guests traveled from places as far as Sweden and as near as the other side of the island to take part in the destination wedding.
Andria is the owner and creative director of Lilikoi Design + Letterpress and co-owner of Peach Press. So naturally, she designed the stationery and paper items herself. She collaborated with calligrapher Betsy Dunlap on the letterpressed suite. The result was simple and chic, with textural representations of seashells on the thick cotton paper.
Perched atop a bluff on five acres of land overlooking Secret Beach, the private estate offered views of the waters below. Guests arrived early to enjoy the scenery and the tropical weather while sipping Champagne.
Because it was a destination wedding, Andria and Jeff made sure to entertain their guests all weekend. They rented three big properties; each night, one of the houses was the site of an informal gathering.
Following the ceremony, the bridal party headed down to the beach for portraits with photographer Toby Hoogs. The six bridesmaids wore floor-length Rachel Pally dresses and leis; each topped off her look with a Tahitian black-pearl necklace -- a gift from the bride, which was presented wrapped in tissue and tucked into a beautiful seashell.
The bride wore a Monique Lhuillier gown in a misty gray and carried a bouquet of white peonies wrapped with silk tulle. Jeff gave her a diamond necklace to wear (and a love letter) just prior to her walk down the aisle.
Long tables set up in a tent on the property were decorated with glowing candles in sea urchin-shaped vessels.
Andria and Jeff wanted to keep the decor low on the tables to enable guests to converse with ease and see everyone in attendance. Since the guest list was small, the reception maintained a dinner-party atmosphere.
To honor their shared Japanese backgrounds, the couple included chopsticks at each place setting for the Asian- and island-inspired gourmet meal. Designed by Andria, the wrappers were letterpressed with a coral pattern and the wedding date, sewn together, tucked into a folded napkin, and set beside the menu.
The fathers kicked off the evening with a pair of toasts. Andria's father had the guests in tears with his heartfelt words, and Jeff's father followed up with lots of laughs.
Guests dined on local fare, such as island greens, seared ahi, and a coconut and passionfruit dessert. Shortly after dining, they took to the dance floor as the band played everything from blues to reggae.
